ESPN: Sources: Yankees expected to make record-setting offer to A-Rod
This from Buster Olney:
The New York Yankees have asked to meet with third baseman Alex Rodriguez, and if and when they get that meeting, league sources indicate the team is prepared to make him an offer that will exceed, in average salary, the $27 million per year that he is scheduled to make over the next three seasons—and A-Rod would be in line to set yet another salary benchmark.
The offer could be for something in the range of five years—beyond the three years Rodriguez is already under contract for, from 2008-10—and perhaps $30 million a year. The highest per-workday salary earned to date is the $28 million Roger Clemens received, in prorated salary, for a little less than four months of work this season.
I doubt very much that Boras will allow this meeting. But if it happens, it could only mean good things for the New York Yankees.

I doubt very much that Boras will allow this meeting.
So Boras will only accept offers by fax or something? Do you seriously believe that he’s not interested in finding out if the Yankees are willing to pay more than he thinks anyone else will? I mean, it’s not like the Yankees are asking to meet with Rodriguez but not Boras.
Do you seriously believe that hes not interested in finding out if the Yankees are willing to pay more than he thinks anyone else will?
No. But Boras is pretty shrewd. He knows the Yankees are able to spend more than anyone else. So by waiting until after the WS to see what other offers are, it forces the Yankees to change their offer, if they really want A-Rod.
Boras may go through with a preliminary meeting but its pretty likely he has no intention of even considering anything at this point.
No other offers from any teams are possible, unless Alex opts out. That’s the only way Bora$$ can find that out, without violating strict tampering rules.
Boras won’t allow the meeting?? Who works for whom??
It really makes sense for the Yankees to get this wrapped up quickly, because, if A-Rod opts out, the rest of the plan for the offseason changes dramatically. They become an 88-90 win team even if everyone comes back.
If that is the case, does it make sense to give huge contracts to Posada and Rivera and pick up Abreu’s option? At that win level, the value of a marginal win decreases significantly and I don’t think that it would be worth the roughly $40 million to have those guys next year. They wouldn’t make the playoffs with 89 wins, so they may as well pay for an 84-win team that doesn’t make the playoffs.

I am absolutely certain that he and Rodriguez would consider an overwhelming offer. If Cashman said he’d do 10/300 with incentives and escalators, Boras would not only consider it, he’d take it. Now I’m saying that such an offer will be forthcoming, but it’s pretty silly to say that he won’t consider anything at this point. If that were his position, he’d just announce that A-Rod is opting out, period.

The tampering rules aren’t strict enough. I’m pretty sure that the Red Sox tampered with JD Drew, but did so in such a way as to maintain plausible deniability. Boras will have a very good idea of who is interested and what they might be willing to do. His problem will be that he has no way to hold anyone to anything they might say during the 10-day window before the opt-out.
1) Boras won’t allow a meeting with the team he’s most likely to get the most money from.
2) Boras is going to be fielding offers from teams while Arod is still a Yankee, thereby violating lots of tampering issues.
someone is hung over today.
That should be “I’m NOT saying that such an offer will be forthcoming…”
Boras is going to drag this out until the last possible minute. He always does. In any case, the Yanks would probably do better to wrap up Mariano and Posada’s deals (if possible) before the series ends. Presumably, they already have settled on a manager and coaches, one of which ought to be Mazzone, so the main issue by next week will be negotiating with Mr. B. After that, they should re-sign José Molina and Vizcaíno - although the latter should not be offered more than two years.
I don’t think Bowa accepted the Seattle offer yet. Is it possible that he was promised, or thinks he can retain his position with the Yankees?

I was referring to when he opts out.

Abreu woulda had that. Might be game.
god i get up for two minutes.
Congrats SSF. Ballgame over. WS over. The Red Sox win. Theeeeeeeee RS win
I know the Sox are an excellent team. I have Nesn I see maybe 60 games a season. Point is , is the NL this lame? These guys smacked around NYY and BRS pretty well this summer as I recall. I guess I just hoped for more competion.
well this year hasn’t been like recent ones. no sleeper picks, no lame teams on a streak. the team that was the most formidable the whole regular season is walloping in the playoffs. i can live with that
That should be compitition, or competetion. or constipation
my only hope now is that if the sox win, they finish it off in colorado. i don’t think i can take seeing papelbon’s camel-toe-jig again.
Thats true. No lame ass La Russa 83 win team.
I can take Papels jig better than J.Henrys I only have eyes for you little boy, appearence, and creepy priest vibe.
Billie holliday jack would be sweet.
would you rather bang billie or watch mattie bang one out in this game
does pap still squeal after the final out with a 5 run lead?
Ellsbury is a looming presence he’s gonna be running wild for years and years methinks.
Long winter ahead.
Word on #50. Said that in early sept. Eeelz didja like Deathproof? I liked the last 15 minutes but coulda done without the 90 minute female R-Dogs lite, And Russel morphing into a gutless bitch at the end.
Havent seen Planet Terror yet but it’s on deck. SSf , Crowned you and yours at 1215. Have a nice winter.
i’m gonna go pop an ambien and watch major league II. night chaps
Thanks OTF. It’s in the bag now. Colorado is paying for wasting their season in AAAA-ball. Time to work on my jig for tomorrow night. And just because they’re on the road won’t stop the Riverdance. They did it in Anaheim.

He’s got a picture of Johnny Damon hanging in his attic

I sure would like to see Bowa back, he and Pena really seemed to improve the infield this season. Maybe Torre deserved better than he got, but without Don Zimmer his shortcomings were obvious. Pena as manager and Bowa as bench coach might be an improvement.
i seem to remember bowa mentioning that he would be happy to be joe torre’s 3rd base coach for the rest of his days. i think his loyalty to joe ran very deep. hopefully his ties to the young men on the team could keep him in NY, i love the guy. he’s a hard ass and a great 3rd base coach.
