Daily News: A.J. Burnett sharp, bats come alive as Yankees avert sweep against Orioles

Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher both homered in support of A.J. Burnett, who gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings to pick up his first win, as the Yankees avoided a season-opening sweep with an 11-2 win over the Orioles.

Burnett gave up seven hits and walked one, striking out six - the first strikeouts this season by a Yankees starter - giving the Bombers the type of performance that neither CC Sabathia nor Chien-Ming Wang was able to provide.

Swisher had three hits - including a two-run homer that put the Yankees ahead for good - and matched a career-high with five RBI in his first start of the year, while Teixeira went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, silencing the Camden Yards crowd that had lustily jeered him for three consecutive days.

Do I have to straighten you guys (and gals) out? Two games is more than one game, therefore the first two games represent the better sample size, and those are the only games were any conclusions can be drawn!

Right, but I thought AJ was going to be a bust too?

Right, but I thought AJ was going to be a bust too?

He only pitched 5 1/3 innings.  He’s a total bust.

It will be great when Pettite anchors the rotation and then retires this year a la Mike Mussina

Dwight is a Yankees fan? Someone stock just went up.

Dwight Schrute?

Yes. He had a Yankees mug tonight.

Doesn’t that show take place in Scranton?

Huh, missed that.

Doesn’t that show take place in Scranton?

Yeah. I guess it could be a SWB Yankees mug.

I see there’s a John Brattain Memorial link now on the sidebar.  I’m glad to have that available but not mixed up with the daily distractions of the season.

We get to face Snacks today.

Yeah, the Yankees should be able to score some runs, because Pontoon is a crappy pitcher.

But historically, Yankees have not always been able to take advantage of crappy pitchers. You need to play the game.

/end Joe Morganism.

FWIW, 2 guys that we talked about at length over the offseason, Cameron and Inge, are off to hot starts.

Swisher makes Girardi look silly.  I guess when the guy’s overall career numbers are a little better than Nady’s, you expect to him to perform a little better.  At least, some people would expect that.  I would expect that.

I am also a little excited about Cano.  Should I continue to be excited?

What if both start tonight and Swisher is 0-4 and Nady is 4-4 with 2HR?  Does that make Girardi a genius?  Look, I think Swisher is better.  However, I also think it *is* possible that Nady has truly improved.  Wouldn’t be the first time a player around the age of 30 kicked it up a notch (and stayed there for a few years).  But just like a few games aren’t enough to say Wang, CC, and Tex have lost it, it isn’t enough to say for sure that Nady over Swisher was dumb.  Nor that Girardi is “silly”.  If Nady performs better than Swisher this season then maybe Girardi is smarter than all of us…

No! Do not be excited by Cano. None of you, no one, do not be excited by Cano.

“Should I continue to be excited?”

In the spirit of [16] no, because it’s too small a sample - but if you have made or believed a reasonable case for Cano needing to implement a new approach to return to his earlier success, and you now see it (and here one needs vanishingly little statistics), then you can fairly be somewhat excited.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
