how much better does giambi have to play for Torre to realize that he should be the everyday dh? at this piont, he’s playing just well enough for torre to scratch his head and shrug “gee, i guess the extra time off is helping him.”
He’s baaaaaaaaack.
When he hits like that, team offensive slumps should be much less enduring. He needs to play everyday.
According to Lee Sinins, last night Giambi passed Johnny Mize and Gary Gaetti to move into a tie with Joe DiMaggio and Jeff Kent for 65th on the all-time home-run list with 361.
What amazes me more than anything? That Gary Gaetti actually had one more career HR than Johnny Mize (360-359).
giambi needs to bat behind someone who can steal a base; it would disrupt the shift.
There’s gotta be something wrong with that doubles total.
Also, he’s only scored once on a non HR.
He is such a better option at DH then anyone else on the team, it’s silly.

Yeah, that’s hits, no doubles yet.
Small sample, and for good and for bad Giambi has his streaks. Torre still needs to find a way to give Duncan (and Damon) enough PAs to stay productive, and also to keep Giambi healthy and rested. The same is true for Betemit <sp?> and Phillips. Cashman has done a good job with the bench, but if Torre gets stuck on stupid it won’t matter for much.
Damon had the second lowest OBP in the starting lineup last night. If he has to start, it would be nice if someone made the suggestion to Joe that Damon needs to be moved down in the lineup. Its been over 4 months now. It ain’t working.
i for one am getting sick of all his base clogging.
It’s nice to see Giambi crushing the ball. And all told, he’s only clogged the bases 5 times since he’s come back, the other 4 have been home runs, so there’s that to consider.
Also, I can’t get over thie Gagne thing. He’s appeared in 7 games, given up runs in 5 of them. He has 6 innings pitched and given up 10 runs. I mean, think if Cashman had given up ANYTHING of value to get him. How quickly would he be run out of town?
I wonder what an optimal yet realistic lineup(s) would be like?

the answer is exactly as quickly as people wanted him run out for NOT getting him.

Jeter
Abreu
Giambi
A-Rod
Matsui
Posada
Cano
Cabrera
Betemit/Duncan
play Phillips when Wang pitches. 2-3 times a week send Damon into LF/CF and rest Matsui, Abreu, Cabrera 1 time each. Phillips comes in late for Duncan in close games.
I like that but there is practically no way Jeter leads off, either it’s Cabrera or Damon. I think it’s written in stone that is in Torre’s head.
Considering all the lefties in the lineup, I think the ideal leadoff hitter is Abreu (who takes the most pitches). But villianx is right.
Also, I would bat Arod 3rd so that a pitcher could never get through the 1st inning without facing him.
“Also, I would bat Arod 3rd so that a pitcher could never get through the 1st inning without facing him. “
I would agree with you a couple weeks back, but with Giambi back, it doesn’t seem to be necessary now.

i only did that for the lefty-righty thing. i really don’t care much about the batting order, just who is in it.
but i have to say i love the idea of Jeter and Abreu hitting before A-Rod and Giambi.
meaning Giambi shouldn’t be hitting 7th.
Posada has cooled down considerably over the last 2 weeks.
maybe you can sum up all of torre’s negatives as a manager with the fact that he “defines” players and assigns them roles. closers don’t pitch in tie games on the road, rookies can only pitch in the 6th or 7th, damon is a lead off hitter, etc etc. i’ll give him the slight benefit of the doubt and say that it probably helps players’ egos to know their role.
anyone else find it odd that on the rare times that Jeter sits, Arod doesn’t play ss? not only is he probably the best option at the position, but he’s also one HR away from the SS record.
Abreu, Jeter, Giambi, Arod would be a killer start to the lineup.
kronic post 20 — Odd? There is nothing ‘odd’ about it, it simply isn’t happening. 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Not happening.
I hate FOX.
