Yankee Win Probability: 56.6%

The Yankees have lost three of their last five games.  In the process, their magic number for clinching the AL East has gone down from 14 to 12.  Shrinking the magic number by two every five games with 16 games remaining means that at the end of the season, the magic number would still be six.  If it’s six, that means the Yankees will have failed to win the division.

Winning the division is important.  Really important.  That makes today’s game really important.

Go Yankees.

Cute video - guy catches a foul, then gives it to his 3-year-old, who’s a Philly fan.

I want Chad Gaudin to reduce both his ERA and FIP, if possible.

I guess it was too much to ask that we see Cervello take over.

I don’t know who I hate more, the Red Sox who are like the Yankees, and just have pretty obnoxious fans and easy-to-hate group of players, or the Angels, whose bullshit brand of baseball always seem to confuse the Yankees into losing.

So, whatever the outcome of that game, I will derive some satisfaction. But if Red Sox lose, the all-important magic number goes down as well, so I guess go Angels!

I really want the Yankees to have a shot at Paul Byrd. The guy gave up three really hard hit balls. Angels obviously, have nothing to show for it.

We dodged a ground rule double there.

Steve Phillips upon a completion of a DP by Angel’s on a routine Pedroia ground ball: “That is Angel’s baseball. When someone gets on base, they look for a GB, and they can turn the DP with the best of them.”

Angel’s have a rule against strikeouts in such situations. Or pop-outs. They only want a GB.

Angels, 5 outs, 4 on the warning track. Fenway wind hauling a couple of balls in.

Good evening gentlemen…

How many rounds will tonight’s match go?

In the meantime, I approve of the Yankee scoring this inning.

[9] Gaudin is bon for cinq.

Huh. The LF charged a liner, didn’t appear to be about to fall down at any point during the play, made the catch, threw into the infield without a bounce…?

Ah. Hairston.

An early 2 - 0 lead against the Jays with a “#5 starter” on the mound, I just saw this movie yesterday. The ending blows, but there is an awesome fight sequence near the end.

Huh. The LF charged a liner, didn’t appear to be about to fall down at any point during the play, made the catch, threw into the infield without a bounce…?

You forgot the attempt to toss the ball into the stand part.

All in good fun.

Caño appears, disturbingly, to have lost his “superman” mode with no one on base.

Tallett’s a little old to play Teen Wolf, no?

i’m so sick of watching these shitty pitchers. For fucks sake.

Wow, that was some SHOT.

Oh, bravo, [17] !! I have been vapor locked on a comment suitable in snarkness.

Well played, sir. Top notch !

Mitre mode, lock and load

Molina chased that WP with Defensive Indifference.

Ugh, this is pretty tough to watch. A pitcher who suddenly cannot get any outs at all against a really, really crappy team.

Gaudin’t a bit too old to be playing “t-ball pitcher,” isn’t he?
Oh… I guess not.

Gaudin is showing some gymnastics.

This team is starting to annoy me.

That was quick. fuckerini

RF wins this one against Teix.

You take all the baseball cliche’s possible, embody them into a human being, and you’ve got ...

Steve Phillips.

I’m getting REALLY annoyed.

Pinstriper deserves less indifference vis-a-vis [22], which was admirable.

That was not optimal.

The offense seems to have decided to take a break. Hopefully, they wake up from their slumber sometime soon, otherwise the magic number is unlikely to go down.

LF fell down chasing a fly ball…but Damon… but Hairston…but…

I can’t follow this game.

They’re not going to win a single game the rest of the season.

Giambi taught him that throw

At least the Angels are winning. Can they manage to scratch out an insurance run against the immortal Paul Byrd?

Teix with the Joba belly flot for that foul ball !

I’m wondering what they get from having Hairson in left versus Melky, with Gardy in center.

Motherfucking futhermucking fuck, are you kidding me. Why does Aaron Hill hate america?

Woo, Bobby!!! I still love you ya big lugh

Why can’t the Yankees have other teams not play defense against them like that?

Is HBP with RISP not clutch?  IS IT NOT CLUTCH?

Why does Aaron Hill hate america?

It’s been all the rage since November.

Was Michael Kay asked/told to offer that defense of Posada/the team?

Serious question.. how many more times do we have to watch that Willie Mays catch and be told how awesome it is? Cano has made that play.. what, 25 times this year?

Derek Jeter reminds us why SG hates him.

What was that word? “Spont-i-nuity”?

The Yankee fielders simply hate Mitre/Gaudin.

J,

Roger Bannister is still known for breaking the 4 minute mile.

So the question is whether May’s catch was all that notable given plays that had been made before then, not since.

It’s unanswerable. We live in an era where every play is caputured on multiple camera angles, and trying to look back to/past a time when there may well have been no cameras, or what was captured was not retained (or didn’t survive).

Finally, Byrd’s luck runs out with flyballs.

Can we just skip Molina’s ABs? Let’s just give up the out. My aesthetic sense is violated watching Molina trying to hit.

Can we just skip Molina’s ABs?

Yes. It’s called PH Cervello.

Perfectly within the rules and spirit of the game.

So the question is whether May’s catch was all that notable given plays that had been made before then, not since.

That’s a good point. I think it was during the World Series also, no? Context is certainly important. I guess I’m just reacting to the fact that all things considered, it’s not that difficult a catch to make.

bah, that was garbage

Texas has really hit a wall.

The Yankee fielders simply hate Mitre/Gaudin.

Me too.

Thanks, Alex. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck

This team is pissing me off so fucking much right now.

When was the last time we had an OF with a bonafide “gun” for an arm ?

When was the last time we had an OF with a bonafide “gun” for an arm ?

Barfield?

[62]
Gee, I hope the point doesn’t come when NY is actually LOSING in the game…

Nobody hopes that, Pete.

IIRC the most amazing thing about the Mays catch is the throw he made to second. We can’t see it but people that did have been bragging about it for 55 years. I believe in the Say Hey Kid.  Polo Grounds cf was like 460 feet.

63- Mondesei? Alright I made the katt puke.

Ok, enough fucking around with the Baltimores and Torontos of the world. The offense needs to do something.

Gaudin has given them a reasonable outing, given his status. They should capitalize.

Damon has to get into this game..

Here comes the inevitable Red Sox comeback after the Angels blow bases loaded one out. Thanks Chone.

WJ, don’t do anything rash, now.

Congratulations Boston Red Sox on your 2009 Division Title

We could use a coupla cheapies, right about now.

In the ninth inning at Fenway last night when the Sox once again started doing the wave, Gordon Edes turned and said to me: “The wave?  You’d think savvy Boston would know better in the ninth inning of a somewhat big game.”
I told him how I’ve seen the wave at Fenway in tie games with runners on the corners.
The bandwagoners have thinned out the diehard ranks up north.

Get in the back Mrs. Parks.

77-As they have in the Bronx.

WHAT THE FUCK IS SOSCIA DOIGN?!?!

That dropped in? What the fuck is going on? What the fuck is happening? I seriously want to punch my firs right through a plate glass window.

The Red Sox next nine games are against Baltimore, Toronto, and KC

Swish a wee bit shaken, but staying in the contest.

“Marco Scutaro doubles on a pop up to second baseman Robinson Cano.”

Can someone explain plz?

Wow, the Yankees look like crap.  They peaked too early.
Well it was a nice run.  Maybe next year they will last into October.  Maybe even win a game or two in the ALDS.

77-As they have in the Bronx.

Yes, but the bleacher creatures at least refuse to give in to the wave nonsense.
There isn’t a section at Fenway that doesn’t partake in the wave.

Alex Gonzales on an 0-2 pitch, of course.

WJ not a tree lover.
What about the tanenbaum?

The Red Sox just sored 5 runs of course. Fuck the Angels. Fuck them so much. Mike Soscia is a fucking idiot.

The lead is 4 games in the loss column after tonight. The deficit will be 2 games after next weekend’s sweep by the Red Sox.

The Red Sox next nine games are against Baltimore, Toronto, and KC

So they’ve canceled tomorrow’s game and the series in the Bronx?

I cannot fucking believe that in a tie fucking game with two outs Joe Saunders is incapable of retiring Alex Fucking Gonzales on a two strike count. Every dink, dribbler, bleeder, and bloop just dropped in for the Red Sox that inning. God hates me. Fuck you God

yeah I got that wrong. Baltimore, KC, the Yankees

87- Thats kind of sad. I used to respect them more when they were diehard loosahs.

I think it is high time we dug up the entire slab under the visitors’ clubhouse and find the hidden Veritek jersey.

Spare no expense.

Ha, another wild pitch from a Yankee pitcher.  Kay’s call of it was perfect - as if he was calling a casual pickoff attempt to first, since it’s basically expected at least once a game.

Who the fuck is pitching tomorrow, Kei Igawa?

Kind of scaring me WJ. You have kids and a dog right? Calm the F down son.
Email me your cell and I’ll try to chill your ass out.
I’ll take you out to the gun range.

Does an IBB count as a 4 pitch walk, for purposes of determining whether this is an official game or not ?

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
