Yankee Win Probability: 62.0%.

It’s possibly Mitre’s last stand.  Hopefully there’s no post-Red Sox series letdown.

Go Yankees.

“Mitre (37”

Hated and old is no way to go through life.

When Mitre’s back is to the wall he may bend but he will not break, or he will.

If we lose it will be attributed to a letdown by the MSM when it will simply be that we lost.  The statistical geniuses who would espouse a letdown as a cause for any losses are the same ones who quote the fact that the Yankees have never not made the playoffs when they were 6 1/2 games in front this late in the year as if this team has any correlation to teams of 20 or 30 years ago.

I haven’t been able to follow the team much in the last week.  It sure was nice to come home Sunday night and see the Yanks take 4 of 4 from the Sox. I like where this is heading.

Anyone know how Gardner is doing?

When did the Yankees acquire Justin Verlander?

Two Ks to start.  This seems familiar somehow.

Oh Mitre! classic Mitre!

That was unfamiliar.

I think I am happy with that inning from Mitre.

Maybe.

21 pitches, 3 Ks. I’ll take it.

I know I am happy with that AB.

I’ll take it.

Letdown game my Veras!

I’m understanding that 62% better.

Does everyone else frequently get the Evony cleavage ad?

Not that I am complaining.

I’ve found the Evony cleavage ad follow me to other websites.  It’s kind of creepy at this point.

Re: 18.

I get it all the time. It was really annoying when I was interning this summer because for the most part, BTF and RLYW have enough text to kind of pass for me doing legal research…until the cleavage shows up.

[18] I could do without it at work.

Teixeira is really super awesome.

ARod sucks.

[20, 21]

It is a pretty big nuisance when I am at work.  It forces me to scroll very quickly over that section.

Also I have decided there is something a little weird about her face (I realize I shouldn’t be looking at her face).

Re: 24

This may make no sense…but her eyes look manly.

The original CIVony babe was much hotter.  I think Weekly noted that they stole her image from an online halloween costume site.

Cy Mitre!

[26] -  You thought the original one was hotter?  I thought her chest was misshapen and saggy.

So does Mitre break the single game strikeout record tonight or does he just settle for a tie?

I know it doesn’t really matter, but why is Hairston batting ahead of Melky?

To break-up the pitchers’ spots?

[26] - You thought the original one was hotter?  I thought her chest was misshapen and saggy.

You’re thinking of the wrong one.  That one was butt.  There was an earlier one that was actually of model quality.  This was back when it was called “Civony” not “Evony”.

What is Civony/Evony anyway?

I like the model 3.0 with Evony.  I guess I don’t remember what the Civony one looked like, even though I do remember the ads.  I thought it was Civ*NY, but couldn’t figure out why it was medieval themed.

I assume this is the earlier pic?

[34]

She is definitely better then the current one.

I’ll take clearing the pitcher’s spot out of that inning.

Actually, Fabian there was an even earlier one than that.  Obviously ripped from some other source.  I’ll try to find it.

Mitre has 5 strikeouts? How is he doing it?

Here’s what I was referring to:

Notice this is not the saggy breast woman.

And the gopherball strikes. True outcome pitching there.

It would have required an incredible catch but Hairston could have caught that.

Ah, yes.  That one is quite cute.

Much better looking overall then the current girl.

Um, baseball blog?

Derek Jeter, your 2009 AL MVP? Discuss.

Jeter’s having a nice game so far.

Which one is the current girl? The equine-faced? I see a couple of them. One with eyes wide open, the other one with eyes closed.

Er, I come to this blog to discuss Sergio Mitre suddently flashing OMGmovement on his sinker, and all y’alls can talk about are tits? For shame. Keep your cocks in your pants, gentlemen.

Sergio Mitre suddently flashing OMGmovement on his sinker

This guy had some really good numbers this year in AAA and the Yanks kept throwing them out there, maybe they saw this as a possibility when they brought him up.

I’d like to see jeter get hot here, for some reason I really like having his ops above 850.

As a follow up, I do not mean to suggest the Yanks thought Mitre was a guy capable of striking out two guys an inning, just a guy who was in fact capable of missing bats often enough to survive in the 5th starter role.

Bautista’s throw was pretty darn amazing.

/actual baseball comment

The original Civony gal is better looking because she’s real.

I’m not getting this Rios thing.  The guy had a full not-trade clause.  Everything I’ve read indicates that NTCs cover waiver claims, but he said this on his way out the door: “I’d heard the rumors, but yeah, I thought I was going to stay here.  Stuff happens, and I just have to move on.”

As a follow up, I do not mean to suggest the Yanks thought Mitre was a guy capable of striking out two guys an inning, just a guy who was in fact capable of missing bats often enough to survive in the 5th starter role.

Well, yeah. 7K/1BB rates with Mitre’s GB rates in AAA should translat to a workable 5th starter. But Mitre’s movement tonight is beyond that: makes me wonder whether he wouldn’t make a nice middle reliever, especially with his GB tendencies. That fastball + 2mph would be really effective, even if the secondary offerings are shitty (as Mitre’s are reputed to be).

[53] Could that be “have to” in the sense of, “I can’t on principle stay where I’m not wanted”?

I hate how Mitre starts balls low and in to LHB and lets them run over the plate. That shit may work in Scranton, but you do that in MLB and the hitters are going to “drop the bathead” on the ball and hit a bunch of HRs. He’s got to go away from that at this level.

Recall that Mitre’s MiL stats include pitching injured and recovering.  He may have the stuff to be an ok-to-good starter if given the chance.

[55]  I suppose.  But why not just say so?  Could even do it without sounding angry or bitter.  Maybe “I guess I’m better off moving on if I don’t fit in they’re plans here anymore.”  He made a similar comment when the waiver claim first became public, and it really read like he didn’t believe that he had any say in the matter.

Yikes, prospect beginning to give up line drives!

Isn’t a waiver wire deal equivalent to a release, with the exception being somebody is actually assuming responsibility for the contract and you don’t have a financial hook?

The downside, of course, is you get nothing back.

Oh, for fucks sake. Robby, that’s on you.

Farnsworth

That was so terrible in so many ways.

I would be really pissed right now if they hadn’t just swept the Sox.

[58] Yeah, ok - I guess he’s getting top-notch representation from the union, so understands his position.

What just happened?

[48] he has a ridic sinker, but seems to have some considerable command issues.

Is that the third time Mitre has been unable to throw to second base?

Swisher’s arm is not very good.

Paul O’Neill would’ve nailed Wells at home

Isn’t a waiver wire deal equivalent to a release…

My understanding is that it’s the equivalent of a trade for nothing.  The player’s existing contract is assigned to another organization, but he is still bound by the terms of that contract.  When you get released, your existing contract gets paid and you are no longer bound by it— you’re a free agent.

seems to have some considerable command issues

They say that command is the last thing to come back after TJS.

Triples on a groundball? Really?

So one of the things I was wondering was about Smoltz’s deal.  Do incentive clauses carry over?  If he’s released and then some other team gets him, would the Red Sox still be on the hook for the incentives?  Otherwise there seems to be very little reason for Smoltz to come back, as he would only be making the league minimum.  I could not be making any sense with this though.

This inning sure could have gone better, eh?

Mitre has never been very good as a starter. He has been a good reliever though.

If we lose it will be attributed to a letdown by the MSM…

They didn’t have a letdown, they had a fifth starter.  Uness “mitre” is Spanish for “letdown.”

Ha, Drew just played a single/double into a run scoring triple.

Bases empty Cano strikes again!

Hairston?!?  Really?

Awesome.

The internet is broken but ESPN just told me the game is tied. Awesome.

Belly to Belly!

Mitre has never been very good as a starter. He has been a good reliever though.

Yeah, I’m thinking a Gaudin/Mitre swap would be pretty good.

Do incentive clauses carry over?  If he’s released and then some other team gets him, would the Red Sox still be on the hook for the incentives?

I’m pretty sure they carry over if the Red Sox manage to trade him.  I don’t know about the second question.  I f so, then not much incentive for him to pitch if he’s released, but also not much incentive for anyone to take a chance on him if they have to pay a prorated share of his guarantee plus those incentives.

Yay, Gameday started working again! Yay Everyone!

[75] That’s just plain not true, if you consider how he started in 2007: 102 IP, ERA 2.82, OPS against 0.665.  It’s true that after that he pitched poorly, but as far as I can tell he was really good over half a season in the not-too-distant past before getting hurt.

So, will we see Gaudin for the next three or four innings?  Maybe that tandem fifth starter thing will finally happen, just not the way any of us were hoping.

It’s like the Blue Jays just decided to take a 5 minute time out all of a sudden.

Hirsch went 6 innings last night and gave up 1 R for Scranton. Struck out 2, walked 1.

Wheels Molino.

Is there any explanation for why the Rockies just gave up on Hirsch?

I realize he was terrible for them, but he was once a pretty highly regarded prospect and he’s not that old yet.

Getting to that bullpen early!

90, I think the Rockies thought Hirsch just needed a change of scenery and was never going to work out for them.

BTW, what’d Cito get tossed for?

[93]

Arguing balls and strikes between innings apparently.

This inning could be rough for Mitre.

Nancy Newman sounds like she is very congested today.

How the hell did Edwin Jackson allow a HR to Nick Green?

Gaudin to start the 6th?

That ball was on a tee.

[56]

You called it.

How the hell did Edwin Jackson allow a HR to Nick Green?

Yeah, I’ve been told that Green can’t hurt you.  Then again, it is in Fenway, right?

Should have brought Guadin in.  I hate when managers manage to the stupid win rule.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
