Frog, I thought this start was pretty good.  Are you really sorry they’re giving him the chance to return to form?

Ball 8….Ball 16….Ball 100

That pitch-out was dumb. Robertson’s control isn’t so good that he should be giving away balls.

[101] No.  I’m echoing the sentiment that mysterious injuries after the horse has escaped the barn are ill-timed.

That AB by Cano was so sad, yet so typical. A first class rally killer has our Robby become.

Don, your feed must be REALLY slow.

Frog - I realized that at about the moment I pressed “submit.”
Which kind of mirrors your point.

Robertson missed his location badly on that pitch.

That’s what happens when you throw too many balls.

Man, now Robertson isn’t even close.

Free passes! Free passes available all day as Robertson celebrates America’s birthday!

I’m guessing that Robertson doesn’t have it today.
That seems like a good reason to take him out.
Now.

I’m guessing that Robertson doesn’t have it today.

Now.

Tomko is warming. Stick with Robertson.

The only good relievers they are developing are starters.

Gardner has some wheels.

Can someone let Robertson know that he doesn’t need to go 3-2 on every batter?

[115] He doesn’t get to pitch often, so he was trying to get in a week’s worth of work in one inning.

I vote for belly to belly HR here so they will be more inclined to use the good BP pitchers and not teh Tomko.

We sure went from Wang to balls.

Pete, I wasn’t online when that AB happened, but my frustration with Cano had me steaming long after.

I would really, really like to win this game.

Still a lot of game left.

Thanks to the BJ’s for giving away outs.

That works. One more.

Someone please explain to Sterling that BA isn’t the best way to judge offensive performance.

Runs…

The Yankees are going to win this game.

[125] The game has past him by in multiple ways.

This is the one day on which interrupting the game in the 7th for GBA is appropriate.

This is kind of like interleague play - the fourth of July celebration doesn’t seem particularly patriotic, since the Yankees have decided that holier-than-thou patriotism is the norm.  I’m actually surprised that they don’t sing some pseudo-anthem between every pair of half-innings.

Nobody can predict this game, nobody.

66 pitches for Wang? seems like normal Wang was out there until the wheels fell off in the 6th. Too bad.

What does [127] have to do with [125] (or if Rich meant Serling, [124])?

Wang with a shoulder strain.

Yes, it seemed like our actual Wang, the real thing.

The numbers don’t lie.

It was not an inflated Wang.

(Thank you, Clay!!!!!!!)

[131] I meant [124]. Apparently, I’m as blind as Sterling.

Johnny!

Damon owns him.

Damon! Contract Year!

Damon is absolutely the best at taking advantage of that porch.

Was about to ask about Doc staying in so deep.

ARod loves hitting HR to break late inning ties, just sayin’.

[127] My two cents:  It is never appropriate to alienate the atheist and polytheist segments of your fan base.

“This Land is Your Land” is a good song.

Move. Him. Down.

Can can really suck.  He needs to stop hitting behind A-Rod.

Move. Him. Up.

[142] At least my suggestion mitigates the alienation???

[127] My two cents:  It is never appropriate to alienate the atheist and polytheist segments of your fan base.

They shouldn’t cater to them either.  Is that really alienating them?  They don’t have to sing.

Honestly - Cano didn’t even run that out to first base.
I’m a Cano fan, but I think it’s clear that he only performs when he’s treated like a kid.
You have to ground him for that.  He can’t be pulling up before first base.  Too much play-time, too much hanging with Melky, too much something.  When you’re in a slump, you’ve got to be trying harder, not slacking off.
Terrible.

[142]
Right up there with “Cottoneye Joe.”

For those wondering, a quick bbref search revealed this was not Doc’s worst start ever against the Yankees. In April 2000, he went 5 2/3 and gave up 6ER.

“When you’re in a slump, you’ve got to be trying harder, not slacking off.”

Hopelessly sprinting from point A to point B isn’t going to get him out of a slump.

Or they could just dispense with songs in general and let the crowd watch some baseball?

Insane, I know.

[147]
If they thought their fan-base was Shinto, they’d have Ronan Tynan singing in Japanese.
Given the latest reports from Levine’s and Trost’s mystified cardiologists, it can’t be from the heart.

Is that really alienating them?

SSS alert: I know a few people who love baseball but won’t go to the Stadium, and cite GBA as reason #1.

[154] Why didn’t the playing of the national anthem have the same effect?

[151]
Rilke, your last few posts suggest that you’re trying to get in a fight today.
Problem is, we like you.
Are you suggesting that it’s not better to put whatever pressure you can on the opposing defense?

[147] But they also aren’t allowed to leave and go to the bathroom or concessions.

Not saying it bothers me, I mentally substitute “Flying Spaghetti Monster” in place of “God”.

SSS alert: I know a few people who love baseball but won’t go to the Stadium, and cite GBA as reason #1.

And they’re certainly within their right to do so.
Do they also reject dollar bills for the same reason?

Forget [155], it’s the deity thing.

Do they also reject dollar bills for the same reason?

Is the same kind of pseudo-masonic, Nicholas-Roerich-inspired claptrap to be found in God Bless America?  I never knew!

[154] No god.
[158] Very funny.

Trader.. haha. Hilarious.

“Rilke, your last few posts suggest that you’re trying to get in a fight today.”

I get to disagree with people without being read as asking for a fight.  Here, anyway.

Whether or not hopeless sprinting puts pressure on the defense, the question was about getting out of slumps.

I would pitch Hughes another inning.

Trader.. haha. Hilarious.

I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not, but I find “trader” endlessly funny.

I would start Hughes.

I know one way to at least temporarily end Cano’s slump as early as tomorrow - a day on the bench. Although that would mean Ransom plays, and his slump resumes.

sorry, couldn’t resist.

Does Hinske have the plague?  Why wouldn’t he bat there?  Seems like the perfect spot.  Can’t walk him to get to Jeter.

[163]
You just sound consistently ornery, like it’s just a bad day.
And it wasn’t about getting out of slumps.  It’s about how to react when you’re in one.
If I were a player and saw a teammate in a slump, not helping the team much, I’d feel a whole lot better about him if he busted it down the line.  And he might feel better about it.  And the defense might make an error, getting him on base, which MIGHT actually help get him out of a slump.  Unless you can tell me what causes and ends slumps, and that they’re not sufficiently dependent upon little psychological swings like that…

[166] Me too…in five days.

BTW, anybody watching have any infor on Wang’s injury. i.e. was there anything visible?

I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not, but I find “trader” endlessly funny.

No sarcasm. Stupid Red Sox fans are quite funny to me, especially after having lived in Boston.

Did David Cone really say Kei Igawa was an option to start?

[171] Well lucky for the Yankees, if they need Hughes to make that start in 5 days, they have him stretched out to make 9 pitches per appearance so he should be able to get them a scoreless inning or two before they have to go to the BP.

“Did David Cone really say Kei Igawa was an option to start?”

He did say that he supports ALS, so - who knows?

[175] no kidding. Hopefully his side sessions have been of a longer duration.

And Wang just cannot catch a break. Hope his MRI is good.

[171] Well lucky for the Yankees, if they need Hughes to make that start in 5 days, they have him stretched out to make 9 pitches per appearance so he should be able to get them a scoreless inning or two before they have to go to the BP.

You’re right. Instead of having the 7th best pitcher in your organization pitching at the MLB level, he should have been mowing down AAA hitters in case someone got hurt.

[172] Wang attempted to run to cover 1B, we all know what happens when Wang has to run in a straight line - ligaments in his foot explode.

[175] Excellent.

[172] see [132]

[178] Or they could have been using him more than one inning per appearance in relief?

Seattle with 2 on, 0 out in the top of the 9th, tied 2-2.

Aceves will have to shadow Hughes until he’s stretched out. The one inning relief appearances made little sense, but Hughes is still the best option if they need a starter.

I was inordinately nervous about that inning. Glad it is over.

[178] Or they could have been using him more than one inning per appearance in relief?

If Wang can’t make his next start, I’d bet they’d use Hughes for 3, Aceves for 3, and then piece the other 3 together with the bullpen. Add a roster move (perhaps Robertson down and Melancon up) to give you an extra arm for the last week before the ASB, and they should be able to work around it.

Damon walk-off pending.

When did Hughes last start?

Add a roster move

Igawa for Tomko! I wonder if he will ever pitch in the majors again..

M’s up 3-2, with bases loaded.

[186] If Wang goes to the DL, they can just call Melancon up without losing Robertson. Or they could just DFA Tomko, who has thrown a grand total of 2 innings in the last 12 days.

M’s up 3-2, with bases loaded.

This is a good thing.

[188] Hughes last start was May 31st. Since then he has thrown 14 2/3 innings with 3 2/3 being his longest performance and the ONLY outing in which in went above 2 IP, and that 3 2/3 IP was on June 10th.

Cano needs to study that AB.

Wouldn’t mind Jeter trying to steal a base here.

My bet is that they have Hughes on a pitch count rather than innings limit. Probably 50-60 pitches.

M’s fail, twice, to add runs. Following Yankees example no doubt.

[196] If that’s the case, they should have him throw a 20-30 pitching outing on Monday, so they can get one more shutdown 2 IP relief outing.

Hughes can do 50-60 in three innings.

Hughes can do 50-60 in three innings.

yeah, 3-4 innings is reasonable.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
