come on miracle wang…

We’re going to need really good Wang today.  What is the best we can expect to get off of Halladay?  7 innings, 3 runs?

They need to try to keep it close, get into their pen, and hope for some luck on BIP.

This feels like the game a while ago against Johan.

Halladay does better against the Yanks than Johan though, historically. (I’m guessing on that)

Marv Cook, did you change your name?

Halladay career vs. NYY:

216.1 190 81 67 17 47 167 2.79 1.10 .236

IP HA R ER W BB K ERA WHIP BAA

Yeah, I changed my name awhile ago - I figured that anyone who knew me from before would pretty much figure out who it was.

Maybe I’m mistaken.

Happy 4th folks. Let’s go, Tiger, roar!

Did your s.o. compel the change?

Not a generous zone so far for Wang.

Wang against Doc, seems like maybe just saving everyone time and forfeiting would have been a decent idea.

I am pessimistic about Wang’s outing.

Classic Wang sinker. I thought he looked okay that inning.

Wonder if Wang would have gotten the call on strike 3 to Jeter.

Wang didn’t get strike one to Teixeira.  (According to Gameday.)

Stat pad, please.

That was okay.

21 pitches AND a run against Halladay in the first inning?!?!? Photobucket

Walking a guy after 0-2 is pretty stupid.

I blame the purple pachyderm.

I thought walks are suppose to clog the freakin bases.

Starting Wang is pretty stupid.

Wells dinked it, no?

The walk was Wang’s only real screwup that inning.  The double was a bloop and the grounder wasn’t hit hard, just perfect location.

Lyle Overbay is so sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!

[24] But isn’t that the reason for the whole “pitchers with low K/9 rates aren’t due for longterm success argument”? Because balls in play will eventually find hole.

Also, BRAINS!!!

Solo HR-zilla.

No more posting by my wife.

As of right now, Wang has been better than Halladay.

[26] I wonder just how sour that low K rate thing suggests. Not ace material maybe, but does it mean no moderate success either?

That is the argument.  But Wang is teh outlier.

But isn’t that the reason for the whole “pitchers with low K/9 rates aren’t due for longterm success argument”? Because balls in play will eventually find hole.

The argument is that pitchers with low K-rates need to limit the walks and homers because balls in play will eventually find holes. The walk to Overbay was unfortunate, that’s true.

Oh, Suzyn, that vest is horrible. Were you ever with Up With People?

Melky has really been a nice player this year.

That was a Wangian inning.

I’m following on the radio, but I imagine that Melky’s catch was awkward. He doesn’t slide or fall or whatever with much grace.  Though the only thing that matters is the catch.

Wife still got hold of the computer, rLr?

He leaned forward and caught it shin-high. He made it look pretty smooth.

Hopefully the Yankees can continue to average one run an inning against Halladay.

Wife still got hold of the computer, rLr?

She went to go running. I’ll see her in six miles.

Wangerian inning? still thinking about Overbay?

Boo urns.

That was crushed and Wells never looked worried by it. Impressive.

Sterling likes Waldman’s vest.

Sterling likes Waldman’s vest.

It looks like the special July 4th outfit they might make T.G.I. Friday’s employees wear.

1st and 3rd, I’m pessimistic about the scoring possibilities here.

Honestly, Halladay hasn’t looked great today.

I would have liked to see Damon tag on that. It wouldn’t have been an easy play for Overbay.

It looks like the special July 4th outfit they might make T.G.I. Friday’s employees wear.

Not enough flares, I bet.

Screw the pessimism, I’m gonna be optimistic instead.

Sounds like Cano admitted to radio vest voices that he has had a problem driving in RISP.

Screw the pessimism, I’m gonna be optimistic instead.

I don’t understand the people who are pessimistic. This is entertainment. We should always hope for and expect the best.

Are you saying my reverse jinx, reverse mojo has no effect on the actual play of the game?

confused

He was using it as a reverse jinx rLr

There are plenty of people who are legitimately pessimistic and they are annoying.

I guess Rolen is a slightly controversial dude, but I like him.

Big sexy out, too bad didn’t get to hold runner at 2nd.

When AJ was struggling, how come people weren’t excusing the bad at bats/innings that he had?

7/3 GO/FO for Wang.  Good, I think.

TGIF vest voice says Wells always hit .300. A lifetime .281 hitter always hits .300. Jeez.

Wang has looked quite good, actually. This is pre-2009 Tiger Wang. Now, I would be very cautious past the fifth inning, but this is a legitimately solid start.

When AJ was struggling, how come people weren’t excusing the bad at bats/innings that he had?

If a guy gives up a couple runs on a bloop double and a well-placed grounder, I’d say he has been unlucky. Even if he were Big Gangly.

When AJ was struggling, how come people weren’t excusing the bad at bats/innings that he had?

I probably was excusing the bad breaks. Though AJ typically walks a bunch of batters, so that part would be difficult to excuse. Plus, I’m a pretty big Yankee apologist generally.

I like all the folks in uniform.

When AJ was struggling, how come people weren’t excusing the bad at bats/innings that he had?

Excuses can only be made for players who come from within the Yankees system. Anyone who is signed as a FA is a mercenary and needs to perform perfectly at all times.

There was a memo about this, did you not get it?

ERA under 10.
I am sensing the ebbing of mercy in Wang - promising!

[61] ha.

Posado!

Halladay really hasn’t been good at all today.

I like this version of Doc.

[56] AJ’s still the Other?  Or maybe nobody’s “excusing” at all?

Beautiful swing by Jorge.  Perfect balance, opened right with the swing, not before… lovely.

Halladay only threw 88 pitches in six innings his last time out. This is only his second game since coming off the DL. I wonder if he’s on a pitch count.

That AB sucked, Gardner.

[68-]
I think Gardner figured that it might be better to keep Halladay in the game today.

[69] I would guess he should be allowed to throw 100 today if he threw 88 last time out. So, two more decent innings and they could get him out of there.

Great pitch - sinking and inside, no way to get the bat head around low enough to get it in the air.
You could see it coming.

The outfield should sit down, maybe take a nap.

Ming looking more Merciless all the time!

Tiger Wang seems to have finally resolved his visa issues and arrived at Yankee Stadium. That must have been his cousin Corey who was here the last three months.

Does he really have a cousin named Corey?

Phil Corey?

Does he really have a cousin named Corey?

I was trying to come up with the least Taiwanese-sounding name possible.

I am pretty sure Vest thinks Gehrig’s consecutive game streak is still the record.

Even a lot of the outs have been hard-hit.

I hope Alex realizes the Yankee pitching is gonna hold the Jays to 2 runs regardless, so he can get his stat padding on here.

Teix hasn’t re-busted out yet but he seems to be getting there.

He looks… hallackadaysical.

Here is a chance for Cano to work on his self-admitted problem.

That was a terrible showing, Robby. I don’t think that was a strike.

Drop him down, Joe.

That was fairly stupid of Cano following a walk….

I’m pretty sure Cano resolved to swing before the pitch was thrown.

Seriously, Posado hitting fifth. It make one small boy happy.

Now that was a bad pitch.

Oh crap, Corey.

Hmm, injury.

Unwanted, unwonted mercy.

Wang couldn’t have re-injured himself one pitch earlier when they still had the lead?

Check that, two pitches earlier.

so what was the injury? is it clear?

Not at all clear.

I thought I saw Wang tweak his right foot when covering 1st base. Just my guess, nothing official yet.

Wang couldn’t have re-injured himself one pitch earlier when they still had the lead?

Wang couldn’t have re-injured himself two starts earlier in Boston?

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
