Baseball Intellect - Trade Review: the Impact of Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte
Nady has a high leg kick as he strides into foot plant. Just before planting, his knee twists open a bit, which can cause him to occasionally open up too soon. He also plants his front foot more in the direction of the pitcher. Usually I like hitters to plant more in a 45-degree angle because it’s easier to keep the hips closed and rotate firmly on a front leg. However, Nady compensates for the way he plants by rotating to the point where he is rolling over his front foot, so he is still getting the hip rotation he needs.
Here’s an interesting look at Nady and Marte from a scouting perspective. Of particular interest is a subtle change in Marte’s mechanics which has helped both his control and his HR rate.
Update: Ny Times: Posada Will Have Surgery and Be Out Six Months.
That’s not really newsworthy, but in the link there’s some good news:
MATSUI TAKES SOME SWINGS Wearing a brace on his inflamed left knee, Hideki Matsui took 20 swings off a tee before Monday’s game. Matsui said he felt fine and that barring any setbacks, he hoped to begin a rehabilitation assignment in a week or two. Matsui can take his time, because he could have surgery on the knee in November and still be ready for spring training.
WANG’S CAST COMING OFF Chien-Ming Wang said he expected to have the cast removed from his right foot on Tuesday, the first significant step in a monotonous recovery from the injury he sustained June 15. Wang will be on crutches for another week as he starts to walk again, and he may begin throwing while seated in a chair.
Asked if he thought he had enough time to return to the Yankees this season, Wang said, “I’ll try to do it.”
Wang said he spent most of his time watching television and playing basketball on PlayStation. He summed up his rehab in one word: “Boring.”
UPDATE ON HUGHES AND PAVANO Because of bad weather in Tampa, Fla., Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano are now scheduled to pitch on Tuesday for Class A Charleston. They will be limited to two innings, or roughly 35 pitches, but because of the nature of their injuries—a fractured rib for Hughes, an elbow operation for Pavano—Hughes has a greater chance to contribute this season.
“Hughes has a chance to fly through his rehab more so than Pavano, because Pavano’s coming back from elbow reconstruction, and that has a lot more obstacles,” Brian Cashman said. “Phil Hughes has no elbow or shoulder issues. Carl’s going to have a tougher road.”
Getting Matsui and Wang back would be huge. Huge I tell ya.
Comments
Buzz is that Red Sox trying to get Tex. Any team that can pull it off, Red Sox might be one. But seems to require two very tough trades, getting Tex and trading Manny. So… don’t worry too much?
I understand the Yankees not going after Tex via trade, since they can blow it up once he hits FA. More interesting now anyway.
But seems to require two very tough trades, getting Tex and trading Manny.
And…moving Youklis to LF? I mean really, there’s no reason to take Youklis out of the lineup, so he has to go to LF. Maybe he can be better than Manny there, but I doubt it. Unless Boston gets some other parts, I actually think they’ll be WORSE if they (essentially) swap Manny for Texiera.
I thought with the stupid green monster, Boston can play a so so LF out there. And is it hard to be better than Manny?
If as I heard the rumors are Texiera to Boston, Manny to Arizona, and the Braves get three prospects from Arizona why wouldn’t Arizona just swap those prospects for Texiera outright? That would seem much smarter to me from Arizona’s perspective.
Yankees O WOEful three out of last 4 is a cause for concern. Cabrera, the Os pitcher, sucks but we seem to have problems with him.
Booing Robertson was a disgrace. I never boo my own guys unless they both suck and are jerks. Booing a rookie who had one bad inning in a game that was probably a loss anyway is especially vile, stupid and counterproductive. It will be really good for this team if we undermine his confidence.

Well, you don’t normally move a 1B to LF. And it isn’t like Youklis is a bad defensive 1B either. Manny IS currently leading all AL LF in OPS. It just doesn’t make sense from Boston’s perspective; it will probably cost them more in prospects than they’ll get back, and at best they’ll be roughly equal in talent. Unless they feel Manny is that much of a problem that he’s going to drag the team down…
I will do back flips the day Manny is traded from Boston.
PAVNO’S MIHT NOT MAKE IT BAK 4 TEH PLAYOFFS! wE’RE DOOOMD!!!1

Marv, just say no (to drugs).
Can anyone explain me what is the meaning of the often seen !!!11!1 or something like that?
Super exclamation. Probably due to faulty use of the shift key?
The way I heard it Boston will surrender no prospects, only Arizona would give up prospects and the deal would likely give Boston a leg up on signing Texiera. I don’t like it from a Yankee persepctive. Also FAN was discussing Beltran for Manny and Salsbury.
Can anyone explain me what is the meaning of the often seen !!!11!1 or something like that?
When someone’s overly excited, they will type TEH and multiple exclamation points sometimes. It’s a way to convey mock hysteria.
Example:
ZOMG!!11! WHO WILL PITCH TEH EIGHT!!1!??
It’s not fair that only admins have the edit my post function. Not fair, I say!!111!1
Thanks.
[9] When people (idiots) on the interents get very excited and get their caps lock stuck on and bang out a bunch of “1s” instead of the intended “!s”.

Curious minds seek evidence. You need to take a video and post it on youtube.

Life isn’t fair.
Actually, there seems to be a fair amount of demand for edit functionality. I’ll see if I can enable that.
Probably could have originated with text messagers, or maybe (way back) with beepers. But not sure.
The !!1! and the teh likely were legitimate errors, and may still be so, but have been adopted by baseball bloggers and baseball blog commenters for amusement.

Thanks, SG, you rock!

Dunno about youtube, but I might put it up on my pay-per-view website.
I just loved the fact that the news even bothers to give us Carl Pavano updates anymore.
That said, he’s probably better than Ponson, when healthy.

People still pay for porn? And I apologize in advance.
I think any way manny leaves boston is good for us. This year at least. Regardless if beltran or tex replaces him.
I could definitely see manny in blue and orange.
OK, I think edit comments is enabled now. You have a 15 minute time limit from when you originally post to edit. You should only be able to edit your own comments, so if anything looks off let me know.
No. Manny staying helps us if him leaving means Tex replaces him. I’m basing this on Boston possibly tying up $20MM per year on him as his play declines with age in the next 2-4 years. I’m also hoping his play declines.
I had no idea the crowd booed Robertson. That’s totally outrageous, not to mention classless. What sort of morons are going to the games these days?

Awesome! But…how…?
Its pretty clear boston is not going to keep him next year. If anything they might pick up the option and trade him ala sheffield. I am just tired of seeing his big predator head bobbing around as he trots the bases against us.
Oh. Never mind
Let me test the edit function:
Joba is overrated.
Rivera sucks.
Let me test the edit function:
Joba is awesome.
Rivera is the best closer ever.
Didn’t work for me. But that’s probably user error.
I have nothing meaningful to add, I just want to test this edit thing out.
I’ll try it too.
Poop.
Nope, doesn’t work. It lets you change the text but then it doesn’t save it.
Yeah, looks like I have more work to do…
Yatt, I think it worked for you. At first you had Joba sucks and Rivera is overrated, right? Now I’m reading it differently.
But my own comment remains unedited despite my repeated efforts.
Getting the same problem as YM-PPV.
ah, editing the cure for the chubby fingered typist
Getting Matsui and Wang back would be huge. Huge I tell ya.
Wasn’t Matsui leading the league in hitting, or damn close to it, when he went down? I wonder if he’ll get anywhere close to that if he comes back in 2 weeks or so.
So does the edit feature actually work?
Nope.
I had no idea the crowd booed Robertson. That’s totally outrageous, not to mention classless. What sort of morons are going to the games these days?
I really think the crowd was booing the Yankees, more than Robertson. He just got in the way. Don’t know if it makes it “better”, but I don’t think he was being targeted.

Manny has one option year left on his contract I believe, and there are rumblings Boston will cut him loose after this year anyway. If they trade Manny for Tex (essentially, not actually), I don’t see it making them better this year. It’s possible it will help them sign Tex next year, but that could backfire; imagine if Tex has a bad Sept and Boston finishes out of the playoffs, how the crowd will treat him? Even if it doesn’t cost Boston any prospects, it doesn’t really help them this year or next year. If they do it I’d be happy, because it is also possible it will piss of Youklis.
I have to think that Youkilis LF/Teixera 1B > Manny LF/Youkilis 1B considering offense and defense.
Manny has 2 options left: for ‘09 and ‘10, if memory serves. At any rate, even if Tex comes and Manny goes, and Tex signs with Boston next year I’m still all for it. Even though Tex is a good player he’s no Manny.
Plus, pissing off Youk can never be discounted, as Mike correctly points out.
I have to think that Youkilis LF/Teixera 1B > Manny LF/Youkilis 1B considering offense and defense.
Not the most scientific method, but…using BBref’s batting-runs, and just pro-rating what each has done so far to 200 PA’s (about what we could expect for the rest of the year), Tex would be worth 10.55 runs above average (not position adjusted), and Manny would be worth 11.27. Tex has a .947 ZR to Youklis’s .921, so Tex is probably better than Youklis. The question becomes, can a career corner IF play better defense than Manny in LF? The answer; I have no idea. Even if he can, I really can’t see this improving the Sox by more than half-a-win, even if everything works out in their favor.
If they trade Manny for Tex (essentially, not actually), I don’t see it making them better this year.
It makes them better because IIRC, Manny hasn’t played much in Sept the last two years. It hasn’t mattered much since they were essentially out of it in ‘06 and had a big lead in ‘07. He’s already making noise about a sore knee and it’s only July. At least they know Tex will play every day.
Whether or not Manny is traded, it sounds as if this is his final act in Boston. Chris Russo just did an interview with a Boston writer, and it appears the organization, and ownership in particular, have had it with Manny.
On a separate note, Pete Abe has these two tidbits on his site:
“RHP Mark Melancon and LHP Chase Wright from Trenton to Scranton. RHP Steven White demoted to Trenton.”
Haven’t been able to confirm it (checked the SWB site and the MiL transactions page). That’s good though; there is now a 0 chance of my again seeing Steven White pitch an awful game in Scranton.
“Talked to two people this morning that said the Dodgers are so desperate for a shortstop that they may try and get Alberto Gonzalez.”
Hmm…how desparate are they, and how foolish could they be?
Plus, pissing off Youk can never be discounted, as Mike correctly points out.
Why would Youk be upset? Because this proves he’s not Jeter and can’t stay at 1B?
Or is Manny Youk’s Melky?
No way is Tex in Boston a good thing, primarily cause it likely means it means he gets a new contract (which means generally, Boston gets younger, more athletic, and better defensively, in contrast to the Yankees), or the Yankees have to ship draft picks to Boston to get him.

Bingo. While it won’t improve Boston much in 2008, it will definitely make them a better team as they get Teix during his prime instead of Manny during his decline.
Even if red sox get tex they are unlikely to negotiate a new deal in the middle of a pennant race. Not sure who tex’s agent is but he will definitely want him on the open market after this season with the yankees known to be looking for a 1B.
Besides, we have Joba to piss off Youkilis.
“Hmm…how desparate are they, and how foolish could they be? “
Juan Pierre…
I propose Igawa+AG for Kemp.
Andru Jones.

I think his agent is Scott something or other. Tex is going to be a FA. I noted above it is *possible* this makes it more likely that they’ll sign Tex. But I think it is equally possible that it will make him not want to sign there. All in all, I don’t think having him now helps them for next year to get him. True it could mean the Yankees sending their picks to Boston. Really. Don’t. Care.
Why would Youk be upset? Because this proves he’s not Jeter and can’t stay at 1B?
I don’t know if he *would* be upset. But from everything I’ve heard Youklis is a bit of a dick. He certainly could be pissed about moving from 3rd->1st for the team, and now moving to left. It may not affect his play at all, but just him being pissed is a bonus to me.
The edit function doesn’t work for me.
Dang, and I really wanted to edit “doesn’t work” to “works”, but I can’t figure out how.
The edit thingie has been disabled, I think.
Any chance the Yankees sign Pavano for a 1 year league minimum deal next year?
My Eyes! The edit does nothing!
