Baseball America: Brackman Kicks Off HWB

Of course, that he has not pitched since May 2007 places Brackman on the longshot list to crack the Yankees’ Opening Day roster. But given the drama of the past summer with the big league rotation, Brackman could work his way into the picture at some point next year.

If his path sounds familiar, it is. Joba Chamberlain made his pro debut in Hawaii in 2006, and it was more or less the same that year for Ian Kennedy, who made one late-season start after signing before heading to the islands.

First, however, Brackman has much to prove, and not just to make up for lost time. The Yankees have tweaked his wind-up, incorporating a hands-over-the-head approach, and a changeup is now in Brackman’s arsenal.

It could be an even more menacing approach from a pitcher who is a listed 6-foot-10, 240 pounds and was touching 96 mph in a recent intrasquad game.

Great article about Brackman.  I live in Raleigh and saw him pitch at NC State.  He has nasty stuff and at his size, very intimidating on the mound.  He may not help in 2009 (unless it is bullpen), but watch out in 2010.  I am anxious to watch his progress in Hawaii.

Per Abe:

UPDATE, 4:16 p.m.: Just spoke to Mariano Rivera. He has been been pitching with a sore shoulder all season. There is inflammation and calcification. He has been given two options: a series of injections and rehab or surgery. He has not made a decision but seems to be leaning toward the surgery.

Put up a season like this while pitchign with a sore shoulder?  Mo is amazing.

“He has been been pitching with a sore shoulder all season.”

What, he’s been lying to the media this whole time?  Did Pete Abe eat that waahfer-thin mint?

Don’t get me started…

Managers never lie to the media!  Only scum managers do!

Managers never lie to the media!  Only scum managers do!

*coughBillBelichick*cough

I have been posting all season with a sore wrist.

Maybe you should lay off some of the interweb’s more, uh, debauched content.

I agree re Girardi but I meant Mo has been lying, by strict standards anyway.

mccain looks like a puppet.

The whistling while saying “s"es kind of bugs me.

and take that pauley!

“ockmendinijad”

is that banner a joke?

if i was the red sox gm? turn off sec in the city? what?

There was a time that I actually had a great deal of respect for Johnny Mac.
Of course I used to drive Chevys and go to church and believe Lieberman was a Democrat.
Hell. I used to think my investments would EARN money.
I thought Sam Miletello was going to be the next Catfish Hunter.
I gave up thinking and believing.
No Obama Kool-Aid for me. They both suck.

holy shit that vp debate is going to rule.

Real Time kinda funny tonight.

Yo Rilke. Mr. Nader nuttier than ever. I love it.

I usually watch Real Time on YouTube the day after, thurm. Hope it’s good.

I thought there was only one awesome zinger tonight, and I won’t reveal my partisanship by letting you all know what it was.

Not sure in which circle of the Inferno I’d put Nader.  He deliberately and deeply hurt the country for no rational benefit except to his own vanity.

Ransom Wally Pipping Jeter.

Wow, I go to watch a movie during the rain delay, and the game is still on?  Do they have to play the bottom of the 9th?

I figure Ransom comes up one more time, hits a triple, and doesn’t get a cycle because he hit a hr instead of a single.

BBTN: “Damon’s had quite a year.  Do they bring him back?”  “Yeah, I think they do.”

I do too, mostly because he’s already signed through 2009.

19-8, a truly depressing score.

“Nader deliberately hurt the country to benefit his own vanity” = “A-rod is an unclutch loser who’s not as good a ballplayer as Scott Brosius.”

That Britton bandwagon has lots of room for passengers now, I’ll bet.

I think the Britton bandwagon was always a “let the guy pitch before you decide he sucks!” type of thing.

Sort of like Edwar - good or bad, they never gave him a real shot until this year.

That Britton bandwagon has lots of room for passengers now, I’ll bet.

Not if Britton’s driving.

‘“Nader deliberately hurt the country to benefit his own vanity” = “A-rod is an unclutch loser who’s not as good a ballplayer as Scott Brosius.”’

That’s a childish way to say you disagree, the Frog.

FWIW, Rilkefan:  I wasn’t actually saying I was disagreeing.  I was commenting on how these two propositions, both of which are very popular among partisans (Democrats, Yankee fans), are equally uncritical assessments.  Both seem to me to be born more of bitterness than of objective analysis.  That said, I have no more intention of defending Nader than I do of defending A-Rod here.

“I was commenting on how these two propositions, both of which are very popular among partisans (Democrats, Yankee fans), are equally uncritical assessments.  Both seem to me to be born more of bitterness than of objective analysis.”

Ok, so you’re uninformed.  But you can’t reasonably respond to an assertion of mine by saying it’s equal to thoughtless nonsense - you can say you disagree but don’t want to discuss it.

My bad for responding to otf‘s comment - shutting up on the topic now.

I don’t believe I’m the slightest bit uninformed, and I invite you to use the RLYW users list to email me and try to tell me something I don’t already know.  Your proof regarding Nader’s motivations would be particularly welcome.  In other words, let’s not argue about it here.  And if we argue about it at all, I still say peace to you.

[33] Well, if you apologize for [26] and [31] and send me a demonstration that you’re familiar with the standard liberal case against Nader, and your rebuttal, and a demonstration that you’re familiar with the standard liberal response to that rebuttal, etc., etc., I’ll find the time to respond.  Otherwise I’m just going to forget this exchange ever happened.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
