With a nine game road trip looming (including three at Tampa Bay), this game is pretty damn important. Go Yankees.
Comments
Oh good anotehr Ransom day at least its not like yesterday with Ransom and Molina which I hope is the last time we see both of those guys in the same lineup.
As much as I dislike Ransom, I have been thinking they should rest (not DH) A-Rod a little more often so it’s hard to complain.
#2:I guess. If Ransom’s on the team he has to play and Arod has to rest I just don’t like the idea of both Ransom and Molina in the lineup. I’m hoping Cash will pick up an upgrade to Ransom for a low B or C prospect. I wanted yesterday’s game real bad knowing Mitre would be pitching today against a lefty with a decent ERA. I don’t like the idea of going into TB with a 2 game losing streak, however much as I thought yesterday’s game was a near lock hopefully today’s will be a pleasant surprize.

Is that like an unexpected gift win?
The RLYWBGFC is in full mourning, at least this half, though I’m not sure what kind of tie or tie-equivalent one wears under the circumstances.
So a broken thumb on the dominant hand takes him out for what, a month and a half or more?
Orlando Cabrera is vice president in the PITA club.
Are the Yankees just not contesting stolen bases anymore? It’s like they’re not even trying to hold runners on or even make the throw down to second.
And of course the free base results in a run. Frustrating.
Meat’s slow pace is rocking the infield to sleep.
Serling “everybody knows you can’t predict baseball,” but you can predict Serling’s cliches.
Tying run is at the plate.
And I hope my predictions re Mitre are ill founded
Tying run is on first base.
Mitre is not very good.
Tying run is on first base.
That’s all well and good, but the Yanks have a guy in scoring position…
I don’t think Tex handles the change all that well
in scoring position
One way or the other, that will be corrected before Cano comes up.
New thing that Sterling and Suzyn have added to their playlist - complaining about the glare in the stadium.
Braden’s gameday photo is strange. He’s tilting his head a bit, but his head looks really uneven.
The Yankees have a runner in a position - let’s leave it at that.
Thank you. Go Matsui!
Gorzilla.
16:a walk to Swish here would get interesting/frustrating
[18] It’s like he’s looking at your plate and asking “You gonna eat your fat ?”
If Braden is smart, he’ll walk Swish to get to Cano. With the bases loaded, the odds are in his favor.
Well, we are staring into another bases loaded, 2 out with Cano at the plate situation. He HAS to come through at some point with the bases loaded, right?
Four pitch walk to Swish, first pitch swinging popout by Cano on pitch out of the strike zone.
This is kinda funny, I have to admit.
Grounder to second upcoming?
Baserunner Invisibility Cloak: Engage
Robbie’s trying
Wow, bebop. So damn close.
a hit!
Yay!
But damn, Cano - stay on the frickin bag!
that must have been Cano’s compromise solution.
This is the dawning of the age of Cano, but our collective baserunning still sucks
Go-ahead runner is on base for BAL.
you just can’t predict this game
I started his slide when he was 1 foot from third base. Obviously you are going to end up in the coach’s box.
Some of these guys need a baserunning tutorial.
Er, “he”, not I.
[35] Cano’s baserunning has always been awful.
Saddled with Gameday. Looks like Cano just wanted to ensure that Ransom batted 2nd in the 2nd. Too far off the bag or caught stretching? Looks like the former given the weird progression of throws
We all see ourselves through Robbie’s eyes
41:overslid
[38] Jonathan, isn’t the bigger mistake trying to stretch a double into a triple with 2 outs ? I mean, the extra base doesn’t really improve the chance to score in that situation, so why take the risk ?
How is this team not last in the AL in runs scored? How can Seattle be that much worse?
Cano didn’t want people to think that Swisher was dumber than him.
What’s the consensus on the positional player they will bring up to fill Gardner’s vacancy?
[47]: Shelley Duncan plays a pretty nice center, no?
think when/if Ransom is DFAed he’ll complain that he never got a fair chance?
[Aside]:
As a GM starting a team, whom would you rather have: Scott Kazmir, Jose Reyes or Matt Holliday
(just in reference to an argument I had with someone…not Yankee-related)
I stepped out of the room - what happened to Melky ?
Plunked?!
[38] Jonathan, isn’t the bigger mistake trying to stretch a double into a triple with 2 outs ? I mean, the extra base doesn’t really improve the chance to score in that situation, so why take the risk ?
Normally, yes. But he had third by a mile. I can’t fault him for taking the extra base when it was a sure thing.
I go Reyes, John.
Actually, I think I go him by a wide margin.
You have to Reyes right?
Although it blows my mind how young Kazmir still is. But with his injury issues and repeated inability to be any sort of efficient he’s not a cornerstone. And Holliday doesn’t play a premier defensive position.
Two nice innings by Mitre. What is it with Yankee pitchers and first innings?
It would suck if Mitre looked good enough today for Cash to have a disincentive to upgrade at the back of the rotation and then stunk for the rest of the season.
Sterling is convinced Doc will be traded, but admits he has no actual knowledge to back that up.
Sterling is convinced Doc will be traded, but admits he has no actual knowledge to back that up.
at this point I don’t think he will be traded, but I do think Riccardi is silly for not trading him. There’s almost no way he gets a better package next year, and unlikely he gets a better one over the winter.
Today’s paper had this article about baseball 150 years ago.
Yeah, I think you have to trade him now (if you’re going to trade him).
Does Serling have actual knowledge about anything other then show tunes?
Toronto up 3 against Tampa Bay in the fourth.
I wonder how much they’ll lose to Tampa Bay by.
Geez, Mitre. Had him behind in the count and then had to throw one over 3-2.
Time to warm someone up?
Did anyone read today’s New York Times Book Review? Yikes, the Yankees review might be the worst I’ve ever read in it.
Oh yay! runs for the A’s!
At least we find out that Mitre’s not a viable option in a winnable game against singles hitters. Could be a lot worse.
I would take a GIDP here, even if it means the run from 3rd scores.
66:I stopped reading when the reviewer praised Selena Roberts whose coverage of the “Duke rape” story disqualifies her from praise.
I’m reasonably confident that Hughes could do a better job than this.
Yeah, someone tried to convince me that Holliday was more valuable than Reyes or Kazmir. One of the noted experts on the PeteAbe blog, in fact.
What was the reasoning, John?
71: If Cash snatches a good setup guy they may be forced to put Hughes in the rotation.
Oh sweet crap.
WTF!
When did Sergio Mitre turn into Sidney Ponson?
It is embarrassing when that happens ONCE, but TWICE?
Thank goodness they got out of it.
Wow, that was a hell of a play by BOTH Jeter and Cano.
Kazmir is only 25! He’s been around forever, at least it seems that way.
That looked like Meat was shaking off the sign from Jeter.
[68] Agreed. This start has me convinced he doesn’t deserve anymore starts. Sure, he is keeping them in the game, but against a really bad lineup. They can’t allow him to face the Sox or Rays.
Holy crap Cano has quick hands.
I suppose it’s NBD if they do well in the Tampa series. But I don’t think they can let Mitre make too many more starts. Almost as bad as the marginal pitching is the fact that he seems to have a hard time fielding his position. That’s his second throwing error, at least.
Wow!!!! Props!!! Statheads is Jeter having a good year defensively or was he always ok on balls hit to his right and still can’t get to balls hit to his left?

Cano has to have the quickest trigger on that pivot of any active second-baseman. It’s an underrated strength.
[74] I know, I’m hoping he gets Qualls or someone of similar caliber
Pitcher’s errors should impact their ERAs
Brian:
The reasoning was that I didn’t know anything about baseball and that I was like any one of thousands of people who use statistics without knowing what they mean. The only stat that I used was, as an aside, Adam Wainwright’s ERA+. But it’s one of the guys on that site who is prone to lecture people.
Just when I was about to make a snarky comment about Ransom
It’s early enough in the game, but I’m not sure I want to see Mitre for the fifth against Cabrera, Hairston and Cust. Phil hasn’t pitched since the save, has he? Can he give them 2+?
That was unlikely.
Not good cap
Damon getting a hit would be ideal.
Go Orioles.
If Mitre comes out Hughes will not come in before the 7th at the earliest.
When you add Smoltz to the mix, it’s got to be the most fearsome rotation in the AL.
Wow, that was, well, predictable, actually.
I suppose after Cano’s hit, we can’t expect anything more from the baseball gods.
The Yanks excel at weak popups with RISP.
Those runs would have been very helpful….
Wasted chance to get Mitre much need breathing room.
