let’s get this game in!!!

“N. Garciaparra, 1B (.250/.289/.369)”

Seriously?

The rumored Holliday for Brett Wallace (of the Cardinals) trade sounds like a good deal for both clubs.

Although it is worrisome, as I am sure Holliday will fall in love with St. Louis like everyone who goes there does.

Seriously?

It’s really kind of sad, in so many ways.

Hey, a Hinske night!

would it make more sense to rest all of yoru players at once, when the 5th starter is going, as opposed to giving one guy a night off every night

[excluding situationw here you have a super sub who fills in nicely at each position]

If this game ever gets started it is on MLBNetwork.

[6] The question matches your handle…

I was wondering the same thing - if throwing every fifth game would make sense.  You’d still win a fair # of those games.  I guess some batters do better not missing any games though, and anyway with the standard bench “throwing” is kind of silly.

Probably has a lot to do with what sort of variance you expect from your starters/bench players as well as what the average margin of victory is for your squad.  Given the right roster, it might even make the most sense to rest the best regulars when the #1 is on the hill (say, Sidd Finch) and hope to bludgeon your way to victory when the #5 is pitching.

is how long the delay will last known?

“would it make more sense to rest all of yoru players at once, when the 5th starter is going, as opposed to giving one guy a night off every night”

No.  Since presumably your best bench guy will back-up more than one player.

Also, pitchers are too variable to “throw a game”.  40% of the time your fifth starter will pitch better than your first, and your #1,#2 pitchers are often going to have extra run support.

If anything, you should rest your hitters behind you best pitchers.

From P-Abe…

UPDATE, 7:31 p.m.: Yankees just announced they hope to play but do not know when.

Well, even if you could come up with a plausible stratergeryeric reason to do so, you couldn’t rest all of your starters at once, since you have eight or nine starters and there’s only four or five guys on the bench.

Henry Surtees. RIP brother. When luck ends. A friggin tire.

they hope to play but do not know when

How about October 28?

Stratergeryeric? A Norse Fender?
How are the figs MC? I’m hungry.

Took me a little while to decide you probably weren’t try to play off of “geriatric” on that one.  I was trying to come up with some way it might fit, but failed.

“A friggin tire.”

That’s awful.  1991.

So why are those cars open?  Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

I just checked in at Pete Abe’s to see the expected game time, and took a few moments to look at some of the comments.  Now I feel dirty.  But grateful, too.  So very grateful.  Thank you, SG.  Thank you, Jonathan and rLr.  Thank you everyone here.  Thank you thank you thank you.

We just psychologically deride any/all who do not agree with us or are not able to put up with withering snark.  Keeps it cozy.

and SG uses all sorts of complicated numbers and such.

“Stratergeryeric” was supposed to be an homage to our former president, but I think I misspelled the malapropism.  Got an extra vowel in there somewhere.  Maybe Sajack will buy it back.

The figs are coming along slowly this year, thurm.  Although it was a relatively mild winter, there was an unusually large amount of damage.  Had to do some serious pruning.  All it all, it will be a smaller and later crop, but probably still a helluva lot more than I can think of things to do with.

How’s this for a set of numbers:

Hughes over the last month+

17.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 BB, 22K.

He hasn’t allowed a 2B, 3B, or HR since June 10th.

That’s just nasty.

...took a few moments to look at some of the comments…

You’re lucky you made it out alive.

Hughes over the last month+

17.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 BB, 22K.

He hasn’t allowed a 2B, 3B, or HR since June 10th.

Sounds like Mo’s heir!

Sounds like Mo’s heir!

you take that back!

Maybe Mo can teach one of his sons how to pitch.

so is this “stretching a pitcher out” stuff bullshit?

Yeah, Mo can teach one of his sons how to pitch. But no Mo.

so is this “stretching a pitcher out” stuff bullshit?

this is somewhere between the Riemann hypothesis and the Meaning of Life on the list of questions that will probably never be answered.

I taught my son how to pitch.  It was actually pretty easy.  Still working on teaching him how to pitch like Mo, though.

so is this “stretching a pitcher out” stuff bullshit?

If it’s bullshit, it’s widely accepted bullshit, so it might as well be hard science.

I may have missed the evidence, but what is the basis for flat out denying (as opposed, say, to questioning) that stretching a pitcher out is an issue?

Radar map looks like they could probably start playing in an hour or so, making it just like a west coast playoff game.

Clay’s probably the best one to ask…I know that whenever I start running again, it takes some time for me to build up stamina.  I’d imagine it’s similar for a pitcher…something to do with the difference between aerobic and anaerobic muscle use and fatigue.

so is this “stretching a pitcher out” stuff bullshit?

No. But its much too hard of a rule. take Hughes for an example. He’s lost conditioning from earlier in the year but not so much that he couldn’t throw around 60 or 70 pitches in a start now. It takes a pretty decent amount of time to lose fitness like that. Also, the body adjusts back quicker towards a pear once one has been established.

940 EST start time announced on MLBNetwork.

Thanks, Clay.  That makes sense.

what is the basis for flat out denying (as opposed, say, to questioning) that stretching a pitcher out is an issue?

I don’t know that anybody would flat-out deny it, just like I doubt that anybody would flat-out claim that pitch counts don’t matter, even when they get into the 150+ range.  But if someone wanted to take an absolutist anti-stretch-out POV, I expect that they’d point to the careers of pitchers who moved back and forth between relieving and starting without being stretched out each time and without suffering any obvious ill effects.  Like Ramiro Mendoza, maybe.  Or they might point you to Johan Santana’s pitch counts from 2002 and 2003 to refute the notion that the Twins methodically stretched him out before letting him start.

the body adjusts back quicker towards a pear once one has been established

Yeah, once you’re shaped like a pear, it’s pretty much over for you as a competitive athlete.

...mmm…pears.

What shape is CC Sabathia?  Michelin?

They should lift the amphetamine ban for this game.

They should lift the amphetamine ban for this game.

Excellent, Rich!

For the players, or the fans?

Wow, this Oakland lineup is really, really bad. No one opsing >.900, 2 guys with >.750, 4 guys with <.700. And they flew across the country last night, and had to sit and wait for 2:40 minutes.

That being said, they will probably score 15 runs.

But it would be great to have a couple of perfectos in the same day.

[44] There’s a ban for the fans???? wink

yfin, I can’t believe you’re jinxing CC like that.  He has a perfect through 1, and you’re killing him.

You cannot jinx it before it starts. At least, I don´t think so. But you, Mr., just wrote the forbiden words after the start of the game!!!!

[47] Hope not, I just took a handful of greenies.

Ruh-roh - Mazzaro looks good.

Hey, now Mazaaro has a perfect game going, too.

No way they play. Its an effen monsoon here in New Haven.
18-Rilke, I don’t know. Some macho farns I guess. The danger quotient is off the charts. You might as well ask ” Why are people joining the Seals”
I used to drag race and it seemed safe because I never died. Yet.
MC- Peppers and tomatos are shot on my acre.
Corn and squash doing well. I really wanted some of those figs for December.
Oh well. My offer of rare cheeses and salami’s still stands.
Liuzzi.com. Oh lord.

Need a K here.

Well that was sub-optimal.

Well, so much for monsoons. I just watched To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time in 30 years. What a great film. Go Charles Cheeseburgher Sabathia.

Sorry Liuzzi cheese.com.

Now really, CC.  Stop it.

Runs time.

Cano’s demeanor suggests he was not pleased with Hinske after that play.

It’s not his fault.  The Yankees just don’t like rain delays.  They are 0-17 in games delayed by rain this year.  Some things are bigger than C.C.

(P.S. no I’m not serious about the 0-17 thing but it wouldn’t surprise me).

To answer the Toyota Text Poll Question: All of the above.

I hope this is a first time through the lineup thing.

Doesn’t look like the Bombers’ night - but at least it’s early.

[65] They’re only going to get three times through the lineup you know.

Sure has a feel as one of those games.

[67] Uh oh.

yay dp!

I live in VA, so I don’t get the pleasure of listening to the NY announcers, Waldman and Sterling (whatever).  Nor do I read much NY press and never listen to NY sports radio.

That said, I miss much of the Joba-in-the-pen crap from the media up there.

What I do get is a healthy dose of the Nationals and their announcers, Bob Carpenter and Rob Dibble.  I could take or leave Carpenter.  I love Dibble.  Tonight, during the Cards game, they talked about the Cards SP Adam Wainwright, and why switching him from the BP to a starter was important and smart.

Dibble brought up Joba and said how smart it was to make him a starter.  He listed the reasons and Carpenter agreed.  It’s as if they read this blog.

Out by 7 feet. @#$%$#@!.

Is this the worst baserunning team in Yankee history?

Huh, I always thought the FCC didn’t allow such profanity on air.

Up steps Home Run Hinske…

At least Cano had the right approach with this guy; take the ball the other way.

Mazzaro looks really good.  Dealin’  as they say

[74] Oh… i dunno… i think the ‘68 team was pretty bad…

No… wait… their problem was getting on base…

BS strike two call on Gardner.

Walking the #9?  Mazzaro could be a Yankee.

I would send Gardner here…

6 K’s in 3 innings?

I hate when the fans lean over to catch those liners…

Certainly feels like they have decided the winning streak doesn’t need to continue.

That fan saved us a base. Kept the runner from going to third on Damon.

Holliday is doing a nice little audition.

[92] Yeah… i know… i still don’t like it…

Rube Goldberg, Marsomething? Trivia quiz lads.

Infield in?  Is that the right call here?

Batting practice from CC.

Hinske is an animal…

Free bases!  Getcha free bases here!

They need to re-think their constructive no double headers policy.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
