Yankee Win Probability: 60.4%

With two shots to clinch, the Yanks are in the driver’s seat, but it’d be nice to win tonight to set up CC Sabathia pitching the World Series opener.

No snark, no sarcasm.  Well, a touch of sarcasm in the Angels lineup, but other than that…

Go Yankees.

Update: Lohud - Borden: Game 6 Postponed

Game called; will be played Sunday at 8 p.m. More info to come.

This pretty much sucks.

game still happening?

Game 6 is postponed, Post has learned2 minutes ago from TweetDeck per Joel Sherman

DAMMIT

Absolute, 100% must-win now

8:20 tomorrow 5pm monday if need(please NO, NO, NO)

Doesn’t this mean they’d get Lackey on full rest if there’s a Game 7?

Selig wants the Phillies to repeat

They might as well be dead.

[7] - By my count it would be Lackey on 3 days rest on Monday.  Which is definitely possible.

We haven’t won a playoff series for so long other then vs the Twinkies that now game six feels like game 7 and game 5 hurts even more.

[7] Count again.

So, they opened the gates at 5PM as scheduled right?  Wonder how much they pulled in for beer, food, and parking.  Gotta think about the business side.

Anyway, this allows me to devote my full attention to psyching Mrs. MC up for the Marine Corps Marathon tomorrow morning.  She’s insanely trying to qualify for Boston.

60.4%?  I thought it was 55.8%?  How does this change this?

Yeah, forgot to switch HFA back to NY.  Odds should have been:

Angels in 7: 15.0%

Yankees in 6: 60.4%
Yankees in 7: 24.6%

Does this mean the Red Sox are now favorites?

Didn’t you hear?  Listing the Red Sox odds isn’t funny anymore.  We need to be arrogant.

I think the extra rest helps Pettitte at this point is his career given the occasional issues with his shoulder.

good point 14-someone on the radio today gave Andy’s stats with extra days rest and they were much better then on regular rest.

I know the Angels supposedly benefit from better playing conditions with their speed, but doesnt better weather allow the Yankees to properly take advantage of TDTINYS* and hit more HR without rain and wind knocking them down?

*The Disgrace that is New Yankee Stadium

Now they’re saying 7:57 Monday.  Earlier they had said 5pm Monday.

It’s more fun if you let folks try to figure those anagrams out for themselves, ted.

If he’s decides that he going with Lackey if it goes 7, would Scioscia switch to Weaver for game 6?

Last time a Yankee playoff game was rained out must have been in 2004 when…aw damnit.

SAY IT WITH ME NOW:

CC IN SIX CC IN SIX CC IN SIX CC IN SIX CC IN SIX CC IN SIX

Now they’re saying 7:57 Monday.  Earlier they had said 5pm Monday.

That fucking blows. Fuck MLB up the ass with a cattle prod

If he’s decides that he going with Lackey if it goes 7, would Scioscia switch to Weaver for game 6?

I doubt it. Scioscia opted for Saunders over Weaver in Game 2, probably because Weaver pitches better at home and maybe his flyball rate, and Saunders pitched well in Game 2. If Saunders falters early, however, I think he’ll go to Weaver.

WJ that’s what I thought but with Andy in six CC can start game 1 in the WS and Swisher happens to be a big fan of House so no way he lets it go to game 7

[15] - Andy hasn’t been good this year on extra rest.

His career splits are almost identical for 4 and 5 days rest.

[20] Why? Why would you burn CC when you might not have to?

Didnt Scoshsh already choose Saunders over Weaver in game 2 in TJTINYS based on Saunders being more of a GB pitcher or something?

Needing one game CC vs Saunders sounds really good and let’s him start earlier in the WS.

MLB is such a slave to FOX, they can’t get anything right. This stupid ass ALCS schedule has really been a royal pain for fans. Just brutal

[28] Winning that one game without using CC lets him start even earlier in the WS.  And more often, too.

Need at least 3 out of 4 from Swish, Joba, Hughes and Girardi to perform up to their capabilities.

[29] Yeah, the regular season ended 3 weeks ago tomorrow.  There have been a total of 23 baseball games in the last 20 days.

[31] I’m hoping Joba and Hughes won’t be needed:

Pettitte for 7 IP + Mariano for 2 IP = Win

I doubt Girardi will even seriously consider starting CC instead of Pettitte. He surely trusts Pettitte and it is somewhat a slap in the face of Pettitte to switch to CC.

If it goes 7 does AJ go to bullpen and if he comes in will Girardi install Molina for Jorge?

[30]I’d prefer to maximize the chances of getting to the WS at this point. Pettitte vs Saunders is a wash imo and CC vs Lackey is close to one as well.

[36] But losing game 6 with CC and going to game 7 with Pettitte against Lackey seems to be a disadvantage, and the only potential situation with a true disadvantage.

FUCK had tix for tonight, can’t go tomorrow, why god why

So seeing as we’re spinning our wheels, anyone else seeing the reports about subconcussion hits possibly leading to dementia in NFL players and worrying a bit about catchers?  Are there any anecdotal or better reasons to believe that taking a few dozen fouls off the mask per season over many years doesn’t matter?

[37]If I were an Angels fan I would love two relatively even match ups and want nothing to do with CC vs Saunders.

[36] That’s perfectly fine and reasonable, but it’s not what you said in [28].

[39] Is there any epidemiology on point?  I mean, just look at how all those former catchers are doing, right?  The broadcast work of guys like Brenly, Martinez and McCarver would seem to suggest that you might be on to something.

[39] [41] Matheny’s Injury Adds to Hazy Area: (PDF)

Collins [a neuropsychologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center] estimates athletes incur 2 million to 3 million concussions a year in the United States. He called it a “rarity” in baseball but cannot say how rare because there is no scientific data. That could change. As Collins and Giants head trainer Stan Conte have conferred about Matheny since he was injured May 31, they have discussed the need for such research, and a study could be forthcoming.

Already, Matheny’s injury has caused the Giants to rethink how they should assess and treat catchers throughout their system when they receive multiple foul tips to the head, as Matheny did in short order.

[...]

Collins said concussions are difficult to assess because they are not evident on an MRI exam or a CT scan. The injury, he said, causes more subtle damage to the chemical processes in the brain. Collins and two colleagues devised a computerized test, called ImPACT, which measures a patient’s cognitive brain functions. The test provides an objective tool for gauging impairment
and improvement.

(Conte now works for the Dodgers.)

And who says CC on full rest vs Lackey on short rest is a relatively even matchup?

ur getting stan and victor confused

The promised torrential rains have arrived in Northern NJ.

hey eelz, what’s up bro. Sucks that you can’t go to the game tomorrow. If I were you I’d sell those tixs ASAP.

Weaver and AJ in bullpen?  Advantage who?

Are there any anecdotal or better reasons to believe that taking a few dozen fouls off the mask per season over many years doesn’t matter?

I mean, just look at how all those former catchers are doing, right?  The broadcast work of guys like Brenly, Martinez and McCarver would seem to suggest that you might be on to something.

Not to mention one catcher I’ve been following who keeps forgetting how many outs there are, and who recently seemed to think he was allowed to overrun third base.

And let me add to this chorus: Man MLB sucks when it comes to playoffs scheduling.

[42] Thanks.  I guess with such cases, and David Wright’s, the sport will take some action, assuming it’s not too hard to fix or at least ameliorate the damage.

Thank you Mother Weture and MLB for prolonging the Yankee season for another day.

I think tonight’s rain out is part of a conspiracy that Dana White is clearly behind.

Does the rainout mean we don’t get a postgame complaint thread ?

Guess I’m forced to settle for watching Machida kill a man tonight.

So do we think Soscia will now start Weaver tomorrow? I mean, Weaver is the better pitcher…

Yay, not eliminated yet!

Not to mention one catcher I’ve been following who keeps forgetting how many outs there are, and who recently seemed to think he was allowed to overrun third base.

It’s Girardi’s brain that I’ve been more concerned about lately.

And Scioscia used to be a catcher as well… there may be something to this.

Is LoHud better now that P. Abe is gone or is it actually just boring without his blowharditude?

I think it is just that catchers need to buy into the baseball platitude complex, otherwise they will clash with every coach/pitcher/reporter/bum on the street.  This also happens to make them perfect manager material.  As far as forgetting outs, Posada might just be a ditz; he does pee on his hands.

(but of course studying concussion rates is a really good idea)

Is LoHud better now that P. Abe is gone or is it actually just boring without his blowharditude?

I like it. Borden really has stepped up.

[60] I agree. And by the way, if you read Pete Abe’s Sox blog, you can see how much of a tool he is. When he was covering the Yankees, he was objective and partial towards the Yankees a bit. Now on the Extra Bases Blog, he’s talking shit about the Yanks on a day to day basis.

I think it’s boring. Have any of the new guys cracked a joke yet? If so I couldn’t tell.

“(but of course studying concussion rates is a really good idea)”

My concern was more about non-obvious concussions piling up, but of course one needs to look at something like the spectrum of impulse to the head convoluted with the incurred damage with hysteresis and the sensitivity distribution and whatever else built in.[/handwaving]

No matter how bad the umpires are, they will never be as bad as UFC judges.

This has to be among the most important starts in Andy’s career - up there with Game 5 of the ‘96 World Series and Game 6 in the 2001 Series.
Hope it turns out more like ‘96.

Oh yeah, and Game 6 in the 2003 WS.

Didnt Clemens start game 6 of the 2003 WS?

IPK, AFL: 4 IP, 1 (E)R, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 HR.

Didnt Clemens start game 6 of the 2003 WS?

Game 6

Guess I misremembered due to FOX talking nonstop back then about Beckett facing his childhood hero Clemens, which is kind of funny retrospectively.

How did the Yankee starters manage to choke in the 2003 World Series without A-Rod there to blame?

[71] David Wells’ physical fitness plan of zero cardio, zero stretching, and drinking heavily the night before starting, certainly didn’t help.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
