*All Star selection

Remember when people were calling J.D. Drew Nancy? Who's laughing now?

I have no idea what's up with Abreu's zone rating. He's been horrific statistically but he hasn't looked quite that bad to me. Right now, he's the worst RF in the league. For the bargain price of $16 million.

SG, you are the hardest working man in saber-metrics!

As for Abreu, I believe the word is, “Yikes!”

He’s been horrific statistically but he hasn’t looked quite that bad to me.

The interesting thing is he *has* looked that bad to me.  Earlier in the year, there were several balls hit to RF that I thought, “those are outs”, that would fall into the gap.  I couldn’t understand why Abreu wasn’t getting to them.  Any more a ball hit to RF I start shuddering, kind of like last year a ball hit just to the left of 2nd base in the infield.

Maybe I just have higher-expectations for outfielders now with Damon and Melky on LF/CF, and these balls weren’t catchable.  But I’ve felt that Abreu’s defense has been off all year.

I definitely think Abreu has looked below average, but I had no idea he was this bad.  I thought he would be in the -5 area, pro-rated to -10 over a full season, a smidgen better than Sheffield.  Instead, he’s right around Bernie 2005-2006 bad, and he sure as hell isn’t hitting enough to make up for it.

I wonder if Matsui in RF and Abreu DHing would make more sense.  Given Matsui’s health issues, probably not.

Soft player.

Soft player

Can we agree to ‘bad player’ (in 2008, thus far)?

HA soft. and clearly bad.

Look at Eric Hinske. Not bad.

I now mainly view Abreu as compensatory draft picks in waiting.

Hopefully. He stinks, remember.

He could accept arbitration if no one bites.

He could accept arbitration if no one bites.

I think someone would give him a 2-year contract...though that obviously depends on how he finishes the year.  I think last year he ranked 5th on Elias’s board, so he’ll probably still be an ‘A’ player this offseason.  Certainly a ‘B’.

Soooo, what free agent OFs are available next year.

Abreu stinks!  I wish you would have included Fukudome in the stats to show how the Yankees screwed up!  Abreu is nothing more then a one hop fielder since he came to the Yankees.  He sucks plain and simple.

Cashman had a chance to buy out his contract and sign Drew in 2007.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
