Carl Crawford is a good example of how just looking at OPS ignores large parts of a player’s value. Despite having an OPS lower than several players behind him, his defense and high number of steals at a good percentage have made him the most valuable LF in the AL to this point in the season. Johnny Damon’s second despite tailing off quite a bit lately (.235/.339/.416 since May 19).

Damon joins Juan Rivera and Denard Span as players who were seemingly denied a spot on the All Star team, which is fine. After all, squeezing in a sixth Red Sock is important.  I kid.  Bay’s probably not really a -12 defender, UZR says -9 and it supposedly adjusts for Fenway.  So that makes him a +18, which is still worse than Rivera and Damon, and ties him with Span.  Maybe I shouldn’t kid.  Maybe I should be outraged.

Left field is generally considered a strong offensive position, but looking at the AL LF this year I’m left fairly unimpressed. Almost as unimpressed as when I watch the Yankees play the Angels. Not quite, but almost.

Left field is generally considered a strong offensive position, but looking at the AL LF this year I’m left fairly unimpressed.

Without looking at all the other outfielders, I’m thinking relative to CF and RF, LF offense is relatively better. Just seems to be a down year? Or maybe I should wait until you cover the rest of the outfield.

Johnny is generally good at baseball. But I have a feeling that he has slipped some defensively.

Wow, -9 for Bay.  Has his defense - park neutral - really already cost the Sox a game?  Does he really just suck that much?  He’s seemed competent enough out there.

UZR also has Damon as a -9.4 defender so that knocks him down to a 14.5 overall.

In the words of Maximus: “The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end.”

It is just not possible to be “... as unimpressed as when I watch the Yankees play the Angels”. Just not.

I thought Ryan Freel was a Royal.

So… I talked up David DeJesus a few threads ago. It seems that the Yankees are going to have a helluva time trying to replace Damon next year. I wouldn’t mind seeing TBR not pick up Crawford’s option and Cashman going all in on him. Or maybe Holliday’s stock will be down .... nevermind, that’s not happening with Boras. What to do, what to do.

Isn’t Adam Lind a LF?

I thought Ryan Freel was a Royal.

Yeah, he is now.  He got released by Baltimore around the time I pulled the stats.

Isn’t Adam Lind a LF?

Looks like he’s still got more PT at DH so he’s considered a DH for now (and the top ranked one so far this year, although I’ll post the list later).

If Damon would accept a one year deal, I wouldn’t mind having him back.

Is there a reason you used ZR as opposed to UZR? I’m not that informed on Dfensive metrics (other then that they are questionable), but I thought UZR was considered a ‘more accurate’ stat. Are there other defensive stats that should be used? How about an average of all of them?

I have been trying to use an average of ZR and UZR most of the time.  The reason I used just ZR here is that it was only being updated weekly and I wanted to use something more current.  It looks like they may be updating it more frequently now although I’m not certain.

Ryan Freel has already been traded twice this year I believe.

Orioles to Cubs to Royals I think.

I would like Carl Crawford in our LF a lot more than Jason Bay or Matt Holliday

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
