*All Star selection

Although some of these people have worn gloves at points in the season, I'm ignoring their defensive contributions or lack thereof. I am probably far more amused than I should be about the fact that Frank Thomas was -4 for the Blue Jays and has been +6 for Oakland. Good job J.P.

It sure would be nice to have Matsui back after the AS break.

I had a dream that Ortiz had to play LF. If only the Sox got that desperate…

Wow, Vidro’s kinda bad.

The consequences of Matsui’s iron man streak continue to be felt.

What’s the point of having a DH if he can’t hit? Hilarious.

Milton Bradley would sure look good as the Yanks CF.  Cashman apparently wanted to acquire him but Torre vetoed the move.

Can Bradley play much defense anymore at this point?  The Rangers have only asked him to wear a glove 19 times this season, and have not put him in CF at all.  I assume this is an effort to preserve his health.

That aside, he’d look damned good in the batter’s box, especially the one on the right.

diagree with me if you’d like (and I am sure you will)...but I am not buying into Milton Bradley as some kind of elite player all of a sudden.

Can Bradley play much defense anymore at this point?

I’m sure he *can*.  Here are his fielding stats, and the last few years his ZR seems respectable, even in CF.  Whether Texas is keeping him at DH to preserve his health, or if they simply feel their other OF’s are better I do not know.

but I am not buying into Milton Bradley as some kind of elite player all of a sudden.

I don’t know if anyone thinks he is an “elite player”.  He’s a talented player who has consistently put up above average (if only slightly many years) numbers, who is having a career-year.  Given the state of the Yankees outfield would I *want* him over Melky or Abreu (or now Gardner)?  Sure.  But I wouldn’t expect him to be the cornerstone of the team or anything.

He’s been an “elite player” before when healthy.  Problem is he’s never healthy for long.  It also may explain some of his more elite-looking stretches (gets hot, does well, gets hurt before he cools off).

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
