The Big Enigma vs. The Big Primadonna.

I can’t liveblog tonight, so if anyone out there is up for it feel free.

***Jonathan answering the call***

This series makes me a bit nervous.  The White Sox have been bad this year.  But they still have some pretty good hitters and some decent arms on the team.  I dread a series loss.  Alex Rodriguez would certainly like to put 500 behind him.  The sooner the better for him and the team.

Pre-game chatter: I’m not sure what the hell happened to Contreras, but his ERA has ballooned to 6.22 (73 ERA+).  Dye is 20 for 50 against Mussina with 2 HR.  This is a game the Yankees should win.
Its odd that the two players in the lineup with the worst SLG% are batting 1 and 3.  Not to mention they are at the bottom of the team in OBP.

Top 1st: Owens flies out to right.

Fields hits one into the gap in right center and Melky runs it down.  Looked like an extra base hit for a second.  Two down.

Thome up and the shift is on.  The 2-2 pitch looked well.  Good movement on that pitch.  Even better was the next pitch which catches the big guy looking.  Mussina’s first innings can be deceiving.  Didn’t he strike out the side recently in the first and then completely suck the rest of the game?

Bottom 1st: Damon leading off.  Contreras looks like he’s 45 years old.  Damon swings awkwardly and breaks his bat, dinking a ball to third.  It was hit too softly so Damon beats out the throw.

On a check swing, Jeter holds up, so says the first base ump.  Ozzie Guillen was mouthing off at the call and the ump throws him out.  And he’s really giving hell now.  Jeter takes advantage of his second life by lining a single to center.  Damon moves to third.

So how will they fail to score here?  I shudder to think.  Jokes on me as Abreu hits a 3-run bomb into the upper deck in right! 3-0 Yankees

A-Rod flies out to right.  Good swing on a 3-2 pitch but didn’t get the best part of the bat on it.

Kay is talking nonsense now about that rainout game that was made up in Baltimore.  Apparently the statistical screwup has him flustered.  Matsui homers to right center! 4-0 Yankees

Posada doubles to the gap in left center.  What a season he is having.  Man, A-Rod is the one guy not to join the party so far….

It would be pretty cool to see Cano go deep here.  Eh, he flies out to center.

Andy Phillips digs in and on an 0-2 pitch he flies out to center as well.

Top 2nd: Konerko hits a humpback liner to center for a single.

Pierzynski grounds softly to Phillips who makes a very nice throw on a spin to second to get the lead out.  That’s all they get but it was a nice play.

A-Rod makes a terrific diving stop on a Dye one hop liner to his right.  A-Rod gets up and gets the lead out at second.  That’s all they get but it was a nice play.

Podsednik singles to center on a grounder.  Poop.  Runners on the corners.

A crafty pitcher like Moose should be able to strike out Uribe.  Or not.  Uribe homers to left.  I was about to write before how Uribe either homers or strikes out.  Way to blow a 4 run lead, Mike.  4-3 Yankees

Next chump flies out to Matsui.  Moose looks like crap.  Maybe Joba should take his spot in the rotation and Moose should move to the pen.  Heh.

Bottom 2nd:  Melky swings at a splitter in the dirt and strikes out.

Another strikeout on a splitter.  This time Damon is gone and on a swing that looked like he was warming up in the batting circle.

Jeter flies out to left.  Hmmm.  If the Yankees offense shuts down again I will have to break many things in this apartment.  I don’t own that much at the moment so I really can’t afford to do so.

Top 3rd:  Owens slices a liner to A-Rod who makes the grab for the out.

Mussina strikes out Fields on 3 pitches, the third one swinging at a 2-seamer.

Thome taps one to the right side and Mussina fields and applies the tag.  Good inning, for a change.

Bottom 3rd: C’mon Abreu, stay hot.  He singles to center.

A-Rod flies out deep to center.  You tease.  Abreu is caught stealing too.  This inning has gone to shit.

Matsui walks and Posada singles to keep the inning alive.  Men on 1st and 2nd.

And Cano drills a homer to right center!!!!!  7-3 Yankees

WJ, here’s Elisha if you can click quickly without the fiance looking.  Its hard to just take a quick look, however, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Props to SG for calling that dinger.  Pitching change time.  Haeger in.

Phillips reaches on an errant throw from Uribe that Konerko can’t scoop cleanly.

And Melky apparently has added a few weights to the bench press because he lines one out of the yard to left!  9-3 Yankees

Everyone BUT A-Rod is homering tonight.

Damon walks.  He can’t homer anymore.

Jeter grounds to Uribe who goes to second for the last out.

Top 4th: Konerko doubles to the right corner.  Mussina is trying to see how many runs he can give up before getting yanked.

AJ grounds out to Cano who made a nice grab.  Konerko stays at second because he’s slower than molasses.

Another grounder to Cano who gets Dye out at first.  Konerko stays at second because he’s slower than molasses.

Another slow grounder to the right side and Moose fields and steps on first.

Bottom 4th: Abreu flies out to Podsednik who made a slight leap at the end to make the catch.

A knuckleballer might not be what Alex needs right now.  And he hits one to right that Dye makes a running catch on and slams into the wall hard.  Good contact for Alex there.  He’ll get that homer soon.

Matsui walks again.  Watch Posada go deep here.  SG and I should have our own hotline because Posada goes deep to right for a 2-run jack!  11-3 Yankees

Cano lines out to center.

Top 5th:  Apparently RLYW might have another mascot for now.

Moose likes her, as he strikes out Uribe.  Too bad he didn’t do that last time he was up.

Richar pops out to Cano.

Yeesh, a grounder to short turns into a single because Jeter has no range.  He’s a statue.  It also looks like he plays halfway all the time.  He should be much deeper at short than he is.  Irritating.

Fields strikes out.  After a shaky second inning, Moose has looked good.

Bottom 5:  Phillips pops out.  And Melky flies out to center.  Is it time to put Cairo in?  Is Shelley Duncan still on the team?

Damon walks.  How does that keep happening?

Jeter flies out.

Top 6th: Thome singles to lead off.  The Orioles have now gone up 5-2 on the Red Sox.  I know its foolish but I still haven’t given up on the division.  I was listening to Ed Coleman’s Mets report on WFAN today (don’t ask me why) and he was asked about the recent Gagne trade and he said it was good for the Sox and added “and there’s already no question the Yankees aren’t going to catch Boston for the division.”  Now, it is unlikely that the Yankees stage a division comeback.  But “no question”?  And those were his exact words.  Crap like that pisses me off.  There are two months left of regular season baseball.  And its well known that Ed hates the Yankees with a passion so I shouldn’t take anything he says seriously.  Still….

Konerko strikes out looking on a change.  And he gets tossed for arguing the pitch.

Pop out to A-Rod for the second out.

Dye gone swinging.  Nice.

And I’m gone since I need something to eat and have squat in the house.

***Jonathan out***

AW shit yeah. The Wilson Betemit era begins.

Cabrera passed the Damon line for OBP and the Abreu line for SLG.  Considering where both bat relative to Cabrera, that is not a good thing.  If Damon has to bat 1st because he’s the leadoff hitter, why not follow that with:

Cabrera
Jeter
Alex
Matsui
Posada
Abreu
Cano
Phillips.

Or does batting 7th hurt Abreu’s feelings?

Its a nonstop sploogefest on NESN today.

Holy shit, Melky is slugging almost .410? he’s having an awesome year

Michael Kay: Is Alex pressing? It’s been twelve at bats since number 499.

Twelve at bats!!! Let me know when it gets to thirty.

I’ll do some liveblogging in the comments section to compensate.

pregame: Girardi and Kay yammering about A-Rod.

Is it just me or has Jeter not had an XBH in a while.

I’ve got NESN on the tube and YES on the lap top, and my fiance is out. Sweet.

still pregame: “commercial break in progress: these items and many others available at MLB.com shop.”

Its a nonstop sploogefest on NESN today.

I wonder what would happened if Gagne went back on the DL.

Brian Roberts just homered on Beckett’s first pitch to ease the splooging a bit.

What does sploogefest mean?

At this point, is the Yankee’s first three hitters better or the back three?

This White Sox lineup sucks.

It means the guys in the studio and the booth: Eck, Castiglione, Rem Dawg, etc…are all positively orgasmic about the Gagne deal.

Leiter is schooling Girardi on pitch counts.

I’m glad that little fella wasn’t traded for Eric Gagne.

Melky is the man.

Every time Melky makes a great defensive play, I can’t help but think that Torre would still have Bernie out there if he had his druthers.

aghhhhh! where was that? Moose is none too pleased.

Leiter and Girardi, that’s probably the strongest of the YES booth.

Bedard tops out at 89? I thought he threw harder.

Agreed VillainX. I like O’Niell for Humor, though.

Bedard tops out at 89? I thought he threw harder.

He does.  That’s wrong or he’s hurt.

Corey Patterson just made a fucking sick play.

He must throw a cut fastball or two seamer in addition to a four seamer, because all his FB so far have been 88-89.

Damon can still run, even if he lacks the other four tools.

Holy shit, Melky is slugging almost .410? he’s having an awesome year

====

Melky had a terrible April, but since April 28, his numbers rival a young Bernie Williams (1994 Bernie):

.317 AVG
.377 OBP
.467 SLG

That was an amusing fist pump by Damon.

By the way, I think Damon is happy go lucky enough to accept less playing time when Giambi comes back.  He realizes he hasn’t been the same and more time to heal probably will make him more productive.  But that’s just my guess cause he smiles a lot.

Infield hit for Damon! Suck it, you eggheads!!! Damon should get an extension!!!

The difference is, Bernie always had a terrible April too, and those would be his numbers for the SEASON.

Ozzie should shut up, but the umpire needs to give him more rope.

That was a fast ejection.  What happened?  Balls and strikes?

Terrible hook there.

Shut the fuck up already.

Ozzie is certainly getting his money’s worth. That was not well handled by Cuzzi there.

[32]Well, yes, that is the caveat.

I first made the comparison in the very beginning in July.  At the time, it gave Bernie twice as many more ABs than the sample size I was working with.

However, Melky has accumulated 50 more ABs and his numbers are still getting better.

We’ll have to wait for the season to end to truly evaluate it, and I’m not saying Cabrera will develop into Bernie Williams in his prime or anything, I just thought it was interesting.

That was good hitting by Jeter.

Atta boy Cap’n!

Melky has been rather impressive both offensively and defensively.  He’s the team’s center fielder until Austin Jackson reaches the majors.

I’m glad I’m home to watch this game.

Can’t let this opportunity slip by here, boys.

I think they will fail to score as Abreu will hit a line drive off of Jeter, and it will be caught by Konerko on the rebound, who will touch first. Then they will walk A-Rod and Matsui will strike out!

Abreu stole Arod’s homerun.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah—we have the good Bobby Abreu tonight….

CRAP! Abreu ruined my plan!

I was just about to make a crack about what a buzzkill to see Abreu hitting in the number three hole. Glad I waited.

Yeah. Contreras is toast.

C’mon, Alex…

Seriously, awesome by Abreu.

I like it when Damon and Abreu are good.

GO GO GODZILLA!!!!

Matsui stole Arod’s home run!

Poor Contreras. I always liked him, but he is one cooked goose.

Matsui kicks serious fucking ass this month.

Jesus, this is batting practice.

Man, A-rod looks like a total loser right now.

Mussina can’t be enjoying this long inning.

I made a version of American Chop Suey for dinner today, except I used flank steak instead of ground beef and ramen noodles instead of elbow macaroni, then, instead of canned tomatoes, I used habanero bbq sauce.

Contreras’ velocity sucks.

A-Rod, Cano and Phillips must feel like real losers.

Did I hear right that in his bullpen debut last night, Joba pitched a 1-2-3 inning, struck out the side, and hit 99 on the gun?

You heard correctly, WJ. Chamberlain has a chance to be an absolute assassin out of the pen this year.

Good god; fuck Eric Gagne.

You did indeed hear correctly, WJ.  According to Suzyn Waldman, Joba is going to rest tonight and pitch again tomorrow to see how him arm feels.  Moreover, Cashman said that Joba is nearing his innings limit this season so relieving makes sense for this season but that he would definitely be a starter next season.

Bobby has 3 HRs against the White Sox. Before this game he had an 1.106 OPS against them. They must not have gotten the memo that the rest of the league did.

Hahaha, Girardi, no one cares about the Cubs!

Mussina was just clocked at 90. That’s a good sign.

I like the way Phillips plays first. He’s a useful player.

Wow; slick but ill-advised play by Phillips there.

By the way, who pitches the 7th tonight?

Moreover, this is the best the Yankee defense I can remember for quite some time.

I like the way Rodriguez plays third. He’s a useful player.

By the way, who pitches the 7th tonight?

Henn? Myers? Bruney? All of the above?

By the way, who pitches the 7th tonight?

I’m guessing Bruney.

By the way, that’s 98 Yankee/MLB career homeruns for Matsui.

3 and 10 sound awfully bitter, especially given the threads on this site in the past couple of days touting the Yankees acquisition of Gagne.

Keep trying to convince yourself, boys.  You’ve already had plenty of practice crying yourselves to sleep at night this season.

Couple of wimpy hits this inning.

I don’t recall any threads touting the Yankees acquisition of Gagne.  If you want to be a pissant Joe, try some other venue.

Brian Roberts is tatooing Beckett.

By the way, Mussina is hardly giving a clinic this evening.  Thus far, he’s been saved by great defense.

3 and 10 sound awfully bitter, especially given the threads on this site in the past couple of days touting the Yankees acquisition of Gagne.

Perhaps you’re reading too much into these comments that’s not there.  And I don’t recall many people too excited about the possibility of Gagne at all.  Especially at the price it was going to cost them.

Go fuck yourself, IE.  The threads haven’t been erased.

“Keep trying to convince yourself, boys.  You’ve already had plenty of practice crying yourselves to sleep at night this season.”

Joe! Where you been? Obviously bored tonight.

Joe, come on, what do you expect that the coverage on NESN is like? it’s exactly what YES was like last year after the deadline.

Ouch. Juan Uribe?

Moose usually pitches good enough to lose.

That’s our Moose.  I hope he’s not still pining for Nieves.

...or angry tonight.

Wow, that sucked.

there’s the bad moose we all know and hate.

You are fucking kidding? Uribe? With two outs? Go fuck yourself Moose.

I didn’t think Uribe hit it that well. That carried much better than I thought it would.

Does Mussina have to pitch in the rotation next year?  I think I’d rather see Kennedy have a shot to replace him.  As for you, Joe, put your tail between your legs and scurry back to your own websites.  What do you expect, coming to a Yankee site and shooting your mouth off?  Should we all just suck up to you because you feel like puffing out your chest?  You want a pat on the head, visit your sister.

Don’t mind Bivens, the old folks home must have given him the wrong meds tonight or something.

Bivens is harmless, fellas. Don’t give him the reaction he seeks.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
