Back with the first pitch in about 30 minutes.

Pre-game: It probably goes without saying, but the Yankees need a good effort from Mussina tonight.  Six innings and three runs should keep them in the game.

NESN pre-game is saying Tavarez is a little under the weather, which of course means he’ll dominate tonight.  It’s probably nitpicking, but I don’t like the current Yankee lineup.  From Abreu to Damon you have five straight lefties.  That’s a platoon nightmare.

I never understand why they have to go with an instrumental version of the Star Spangled Banner.  You’re in New York City, there’s got to be a million decent singers you could scrounge up.

Moose’s K rate is abysmal.  10 K in 22.1 innings.  I didn’t realize it was that low.

Top of the first: Julio Lugo leads things off.  He’s the worst hitter in the Boston lineup, yet he gets the most plate appearances.  Moose starts him off 0-2.  On 0-2 he throws a curve down and away but it’s too far in both directions and Lugo doesn’t budge.  The next pitch is fouled down the right side.  Moose hasn’t broken 85 yet on the NESN gun.  Not good.  Lugo’s making Mussing work right off the bat, as the count’s gone to 2-2 and he’s fouled off several.  A knuckle-curve breaks over the inside corner and Lugo watches it for a called strike three.

Youkilis the batter now.  He’s having a great season so far.  Moose quickly jumps ahead of him 0-2.  He’s staying away from the fastball so far, but he’s throwing strikes early.  Youkilis doesn’t bite at two curves low, th en takes a low fastball at 87 mph, so the count is now full.  On the full count Moose tries to sneak a fastball past Youkilis on the outside corner and he singles the other way.  That one was clocked at 89.

You know who is up.  He chops one to LF for a single, and Boston’s got runners on first and second with one out and Ramirez coming up.  A DP here would be sweet.  A three-run HR would not.

Moose falls behind Manny 2-0, missing with two fastballs down.

Ramirez hits a shot into the LF seats for a three-run HR, and that was decidedly not sweet.  It was a fastball that was supposed to be inside but was over the middle of the plate, and crushed.  Crap.

Drew grounds out, but that HR was a real punch in the nuts.

Lowell shoots one the other way for a double.  They’re all over Mussina right now.  I hope Villone’s got five innings in him tonight.

Varitek improves his career .109 average against Mussina with a single to RF.  It was hit too sharply for Lowell to score, but that’s now five hits in the inning, and only two outs.  Mussina’s already over 20 pitches.  I always thought Mussina could survive a loss of velocity since he was a smart pitcher, but it sure doesn’t seem like it.

He has to be hurt.  His “fast"ball is sitting at 85.  Crisp hits one pretty well but Mientkiewicz is able to knock it down then chase the carom and beat Crisp to the back for the final out of an ugly top of the first inning.

Bottom of the first: I really think part of the problem with Moose’s velocity so far is he just hasn’t thrown enough this season.  At least I hope so.

Damon leads the inning off by falling behind 0-2, then taking a fastball inside.  He can’t check his swing on the 1-2 pitch and fans, looked like a curve down.

Tavarez has sick movement on all his pitches.  The Yankees are hacking early, they need to try and get someone on base and see if they can rattle him.

Jeter almost gets hit again by the Red Sox on a 1-2 fastball inside.  Why do they hate him so much?  He hits the next pitch to RF and Drew catches it after taking a strange route, and there are two down.  Not the way to answer your pitcher giving up 3 runs and 20 hits in the first half of the inning.

Matsui will take his shot now.  Tavarez is sitting between 89-90 on his fastball as a basis of comparison with Mussina.

Matsui does his Ground-zilla thing and chops out for the final out of an uninspiring inning.

Top of the second: For some reason the Yankees were playing in on the grass (guarding against a bunt probably), and Pedroia takes advantage to hit a single that would have been fielded if he was where he was supposed to be.

There’s this theory about something called a psychic vampire.  Basically, it’s people who suck the energy out of you when you talk to them.  Bad Moose is a pitching vampire.

Lugo grounds to Cano who flips to Jeter. Little Dustin Pedroia tries a dirty slide to break up the DP but Jeter steps right over him and turns it easily.  Youkilis follows with a fly to left.  Weird.  Boston doesn’t score.

Bottom of the second: Tavarez looks like he can’t spot his pitches because of how much they move.  The Yankees need to work the count.

Rodriguez hits one solidly on the ground to Lugo, who backhands it and throws him out.

Posada will step in now.  He’ll try to break up Tavarez’s perfect game.  A changeup down and away gets Posada swinging for the second out.

Abreu up.  How will he make an out?  He ends up hitting a slow grounder to Lugo who charges it and rifles over to first to get Abreu by a step.  Six up and six down for Tavarez.  Call your friends and family, history’s brewing in the Bronx.

Top of the third: Snaggletooth leads things off in the third.  At least he can only hit a solo HR here.  He hits one up the middle for a single.  NESN cuts to the Boston equivalent of Kim Jones with some completely uninteresting babble.

Ramirez up.  Goody.  He pops it up into foul ground over by first and Mientkiewicz gets it for the first out.

Drew up.  It’s scary how well Boston is playing with Ramirez and Drew not producing.  They’re both better players than they’ve shown so far, and their improvement will mitigate any potential falloffs elsewhere in the lineup.  Drew’s not playing much better than Abreu so far on offense.

Drew tries to out-Abreu Abreu by grounding into a 4-6-3 DP to end the inning.  Moose still doesn’t look sharp, but zeroes are zeroes.

Bottom of the third: When an ace like Tavarez gets the 7-8-9 hitters, it’s rarely pretty.  Expect to see a pitching clinic here.

Is there a stupider set of commercials than the Coors Light “Love Train” spots?  Your beer sucks, and your commercials suck.

Giambi up.  The Yankee lefties have looked lost against Tavarez so far, which is odd because I think he is historically much better against righties.  He runs the count full then takes a sinking fastball just a smidgen low for ball four.  Look for Giambi to steal here.

Cano bats now.  His OBP is .283, and frankly, I’m shocked it’s that high.  He never seems to get on base.  Cano sets a personal record by taking the first three pitches o f the AB.  The first two are balls, the second a strike.  He then hits a deep fly the other way but it goes foul to level the count at 2.  He goes to left again, but right at Ramirez for the first out.

Mientkiewicz up.  The perfect game may be on, but the no-hitter is still there and there’s no sign that the Yankees will be getting a hit anytime soon.  Doug hits one to medium depth CF and Crisp catches it for out number two.

Damon up now for the second time, and his bat gets sawed in half on the first pitch, a foul down the first base line.  Damon breaks another bat, this time on a fly out to RF to end the third.  Through three, it’s Boston 3, Yankees 0.

Top of the fourth: If I was Joe Torre, I’d leave Mussina out there for 120 pitches today, regardless of his performance.  He needs to get his arm strength back, and the bullpen needs the rest.  When Clemens does come back, it’s important that they separate him and Mussina since neither is likely to good for more than six innings most of the time.

Lowell leads off the fourth with a cheap line drive HR of the foul pole in LF.  4-0 Red Sox.  They’re running away with this game like they ran away with the AL East.

Varitek pops out to third in foul territory for the first out.

Seeing Lowell kill the Yankees is always painful, but at least they got Ed Yarnall, Mark Johnson, and Todd Noel out of trading him.

I’m not sure what it’s called where Mussina throws the ball and the batter swings at it and misses it and then has to walk back to the dugout.  Whatever it’s called, it just happened to Crisp, and here’s little Pedroia.

I can’t tell if Pedroia’s head is huge, or if it’s normal-sized and his body is just small.  Whatever it is, it’s odd looking.  He pops out to Cano in shallow right to end the ining.

Bottom of the fourth: Jeter tries to get the Yankee offense going in the fourth.  It’ll be tough, since Julian Tavarez has a no-hitter.  Not a single Yankee has gotten a hit so far.  The next Yankee hit would be their first of the game.

Jeter flies out.

Matsui lines one hard up the middle, for what is the first Yankee hit of the game, and probably what will be their only hit of the game.  Will A-Rod hit into a DP here or K?  That’s the question…

Tavarez misses badly on the first pitch to Rodriguez, a slider away.  He goes back to the same pitch, it’s a little closer but still off the plate.  A weak nubber goes foul at home plate, then a fastball inside moves the count to 3-1. Another inside fastball, but this one catches the corner, and the count is full.  A 3-2 slider is fouled off.  Rodriguez hits the next one solidly to center, but it dies on the warning track and Crisp flags it down for the second out of the inning.  He just missed it.

Posada hits.  Tavarez’s stuff is really moving all over the place.  He can’t seem to throw a pitch straight.  Posada works a full count then rips one into RF for a single, and the Yankees have runners on the corner, but there are two outs, and the carcass of Bobby Abreu up.

Tavarez is showing some signs of unraveling, and uncorks a wild pitch that almost hits Abreu in the leg.  He jackknives out of the way, it rolls back to the screen, and Matsui scores and Posada moves to second.  4-1 Boston.  On 3-1, Abreu takes a meatball that should have been crushed.  He ends up flying out to Crisp in center to end the inning.  Yanks get one, although it was basically handed to them.

Top of the fifth: Moose is at 66 pitches through four.  He could end up having six innings in him tonight after all.

Lugo helps out by popping the first pitch up to Jeter in very shallow left for the first out.

Youkilis hits a soft liner to Jeter, who catches it for the second out.

Big Sloppy up.  I should take an instant poll.  Do you people prefer Big Sloppy or Snaggletooth as a nickname for Ortiz?  Moose gets ahead of him 0-2, then tries to get him to chase a curve away then a fastball away.  They go upstairs with fastball, and it’s fouled back.  Moose is still topping out around 86 now, but least he hasn’t lost velocity.  Ortiz hits a booming fly to center that chases Damon to the warning track, but he is able to catch it for the final out of the inning.

Bottom of the fifth:  You know, a run or two here and the Yankees are right back in this thing.

Giambi goes after the first pitch and hits it to left center.  Crisp races over while Manny kind of trots over, and Crisp makes the catch.

Here’s Cano, who really has to start hitting soon or his season line is going to be brutal.  He listens to me and does get a hit, a solid double down the RF line.

Here’s Mientkiewicz, who really has to start hitting soon or his season line is going to be brutal.  In Little League I was told a walk is as good as a hit.  In this case, it’s not, because it doesn’t drive in Cano, but it is better than an out.

Runners on first and second, and Damon up.  Damon really has to start hitting soon or his season line is going to be brutal.  A walk is still not as good as a hit, but it is better than an out.  Damon walks.

Here’s Jeter, who really has to start hitting soon or his season line is going to be brutal.  (Bear with me)

Jeter hits a grounder to short, not hard enough for the double play.  He beats the throw to first and a run scores, and the deficit is now 4-2.  Two down, runners on the corners, and Matsui up.

The Red Sox get the pen going, with Kyle Snyder and Javier Lopez warming.  A single here would be huge.  No single, as Matsui grounds to Lugo, who runs it to second for the force on Jeter.  But the Yankees get one more run, and probably got Tavarez’s count high enough that he’ll be out of the game.  Whether that’s good or bad remains to be seen.

Top of the sixth: Manny leads off the sixth.  He hits the second pitch in the air towards right-center, and Damon gets it for the first out.

Drew up.  He hits the first pitch he sees to Cano for the 4-3, and there are two down.  Lowell grounds out on the second pitch, and it’s a five pitch inning for Mussina.

He should pitch the seventh.  You can’t keep babying his arm or he’s never going to get any fastball back.

Bottom of the sixth: With Rodriguez up, I’m assuming it’ll be Kyle Snyder pitching, aka the new Brandon Arroyo.  Hmm, Tavarez is still in.  They’re probably saving Lopez for Abreu->Damon.

Rodriguez walks on five pitches, the last two of which were close.

Posada steps up as the tying run.  I’m very surprised they’re sticking with Tavarez here, although I guess they think he can get a GDP.  And shit.  He does get it.  That was painful.

Now they pull Tavarez for Lopez.  I know he had a high ERA coming in, but he pitched very well today.  Hopefully the pen’s not as good.

Abreu fans against Lopez to end a disappointing inning.

Top of the seventh: Mussina starts the seventh by walking Varitek on a full count.  Not a good start.

Crisp grounds to Cano, who can’t pick it cleanly but it rolls to Jeter who steps on second for the force.

Pedroia follows up with a fly to RF for the second out, and Lugo comes up.

Crisp steals second, his 9th SB of the year.  Posada can’t throw anyone out this year.  Good thing he’s hitting .370.

The steal ends up being a huge play, as Lugo singles and Crisp races home for the fifth Red Sox run of the game.  5-2 Red Sox.  Dammit.  Youkilis follows up with a double off the wall in right center to score a sixth run and knock Moose out of the game.

Well, that start went to shit in a hurry.

Is there any doubt that Snaggletooth is going to homer off Myers here?  He doesn’t homer, but does hit an RBI single, and it’s 7-2.  This one’s pretty much over now.

Luis Vizcaino in, ostensibly to erase any chance the Yankees have of winning this game.  In 22 innings he’s given up 36 baserunners.  Nice. Vizcaino does get the out, but the inning is a disaser, as the Yankees give up three runs and now trail 7-2 with only nine outs left in the game, and Okajima and Papelbon looming.

Bottom of the seventh: I’m not expecting much fight the rest of this game.  Boston pitchers have thrown 110 pitches through six.  I predict they’ll throw no more than 30 more pitches the rest of this game.

This team really pisses me off sometimes.

Giambi tries to get things going but grounds to Youkilis instead for the first out.  Eight outs left.

Cano hits the first pitch right to Youkilis, who fields it while standing on first for the easy out.  Seven outs left.

Josh Phelps pinch-hits for Doug Mientkiewicz.  He Ks.

Top of the eighth:  I’m looking forward to the Manny/Vizcaino matchup about as much as I’m looking forward to my first prostate exam.  Oh, Manny already batted.  Oh well.

Drew up.  Vizcaino doing what I like to see, falling behind in the count while trailing by five.

How bad is Drew slumping?  He just struck out against Vizcaino.  I think that’s Vizcaino’s first K of the season.

A flyout by Lowell is the second out.  Since this game’s lost, may as well let Vizcaino close it out.  He actually looks decent today.  His slider has a sharp vertical break, it’s not as flat as it’s been this year.

As I praise L-Viz, he walks Varitek.  Here’s Crisp.

Here’s a question to ponder as we watch the Yankees’ division title dreams slip away.  Ignoring payroll, would you trade the entire Yankee 40 man roster for Boston’s?

A flyout to shallow left is caught by someone, but NESN didn’t think it was important to show who caught it, so I can’t tell you if it was Jeter or Matsui.

Bottom of the eighth: I have but one wish for the rest of this game.  That the Yankees bring the tying run to the plate.  Hopefully not in the person of Bobby Abreu or Wil Nieves.

Hideki Okajima takes over for Boston.  He’s having an absolute monster season.  I don’t get it, he was nothing special in Japan.  I think he gave up 10 HRs in about 70 innings there last year.

In un-related news, Sammy Sosa has 10 HRs.  Who’d have thought he’d be better than Abreu in 2007?

Damon flies to shallow left and Ramirez catches it.  Fuck this game.

Jeter singles up the middle.  Too bad he couldn’t do that when he came up with the bases loaded and a chance to make the game close…

Matsui walks.  Too bad he couldn’t do that earlier when it would have had a chance to make the game close.

Rodriguez walks.  Too bad he couldn’t do that earlier when it would have had a chance to make the game close.

Posada hits it to third, Lowell tries to turn two but A-Rod pretty much tackles Pedroia at second and he can’t make the turn.  They get the force at second, but the Yankees get one meaningless run out of it.  Abreu will bat now with two down, runners on the corners, and the Yankees still trailing 7-3.  The good news about Abreu making the last out there is we don’t have to see him “hit” again tonight.

Top of the ninth: This game’s over.  Papelbon will pitch the ninth, and he doesn’t give up 4 ER in a season, much less half an inning.

Moose shit the bed.  A very disappointing start.  The first inning three run HR set the tone for the whole game. AFAIC.  I was a big proponent of re-signing him but I’m starting to think it was unwise.

Villone in to pitch the ninth.  Two grounders to third, two outs.  A flyout to RF, and even though it comes with 40 feet of the wall, Abreu bravely fights his wall-phobia to catch it.

Bottom of the ninth: I know the Yankees cannot win this game.  It’s an incontrovertible fact.  It’d be nice if they could muck up Papelbon’s statistical ledger at least.

Giambi, Cano, and Phelps due up against Papelbon.

Giambi decides to prolong the agony by walking.

Cano decides to prolong the agony by walking.

Melky pinch-hits for Phelps.  Not sure i like this move.

Melky fans.  Phelps could have done that, and would have been more likely to homer there, which is what the Yankees needed.  I don’t get that move at all.

Now Damon can hit into a double play and this giant ####tease of an inning will be over.  He grounds to second, but it’s to far away for Pedroia to turn two.  Two out, and Jeter up.  He tanked with the bases loaded earlier in the game, which no one will mention except me.

Two called strikes, borderline but too close to take end it.  Thanks for nothing Captain.

Ugly, crappy, bad game.  I don’t know why we watch sometimes.

Scratching runs off Tavarez is sorta embarrassing.

3.  Atlanta
2.  Seattle
1.  Portland

that was shitty

please don’t bring in Vizciano…

5 pitch inning?  Not bad.  After that horrid first inning, who though Moose would be done with 6 innings, allowing only one more run, and have his pitchcount at 85?  Offense.  Bring it.

I have never seen Heineken Big Night Out before and I hope I never see it again. That was awful.

I have never seen Heineken Big Night Out before and I hope I never see it again. That was awful.

Yeah, what was that?

Geez, these NESN guys are unabashed homers.

Posada: be patient

Posada picked a hell of a time to not be awesome.  #%&#

Check Tavarez’s hat!

Great, now we have a Lgetthenext5or6guysoutbecausetheyreallfreakinglefthandedY coming in.

C’mon Abreu!  If you are conceding you suck by bunting, get off the damn field.

5 lefties in a row?? Torre sucks.

Abreu looks like he’s not even trying to get a meaningful AB in.  He’s just flailing like my sister would if she had to hit.

Good to see Abreu put up a solid at bat…... ugh

Mussina nibbling now.

How does Mussina walk a guy who is hitting .109 off him?

WHAT IS WITH THESE FUCKING UMPS!!! Make the right call for once, CRAP!

Teams should just steal second on us all the time.  Even if they aren’t safe they will be called safe..

Do we ever catch a break

Fuck you Joe West. Burn in hell you fat shit.

I want Robot Umpires. I’m tired of these freaking mistakes.

It is astonishing how many times a bad call has resulted in runs against the Yankees this season.

The way Bad Moose threw his fastball this evening, you at least need the umpires to get the calls correct, let alone get lucky!

Fuck this.

Got robbed again, this is unbelievable.

I think using Myers against Ortiz is no better than using anyone else at this point.  And the more he gets used the more likely Ortiz is going to beat the crap out of him.

Vizciano in.. COMEBACK TIME!

Well it was a bang-bang play and Cano should have turned two on the Crisp groundout, but the missed calls are still very, very fucking frustrating.

It’s just not the Yankees year, I just hope they finish over .500.

It’s just not the Yankees year,

Thats what I love/hate about this season.  Every game feels like the last straw/seasons over game.  Then we get some hope back and go through it again.

...and its only May.

I have had enough of Mussina.

I heart Chamberlain and Horne.

I still think we have a good shot at the wild card, but if we get good trade offers for guys like Giambi, I hope we don’t pass on them for fear of not winning this year.

That was a pretty worthless stat Kay.

Atta boy Jeter. This guy has been a hit machine since last year.

Okajima ran around the field for at least 12 laps today, it was impressive.

Wait, is it possible Okajima isn’t a true 1046 ERA+ talent?

Wow, Jeter gets credit for getting things moving…no mention of his bases loaded AB…shocking.

COME ON JORGE!!!

A-rod is such a cheapskate!!! I love it.

I think we actually got a call there!!

He flat out stuck his elbow into him. Awesome. What a cheap bastard.

Oh shit, Abreu is up. We need a pinch hitter who can hit.

Great dirty baseball by A-Rod.

Nice job Alex.  And we got a gift, too.

God, Abreu you suck SOOOOOO MUCH.

Wow, Jeter gets credit for getting things moving…no mention of his bases loaded AB…shocking.

Don’t you read my ranting?

I think ARod is paying Pedroia back for his dirty slide earlier in the game.

Abreu may be the oldest 33 year old since biblical times.

Abreu hasn’t had a clutch hit since the six run 9th inning vs. the Indians during the 14th game of the season.  The only the Yankee I have less faith in with runners on is Mientkiewicz.

Why did Abreu age 5 years over the offseason?

Why is Abreu hitting in front of Giambi? And Cano for that matter?

Did we really start the game with five lefties in a row. And we still couldn’t hit Tavarez? Jesus.

Abreu is such a black hole in the lineup.  This team can’t afford anymore worthless batters right now.  Especially in big spots.

Well at least they cleared the pitcher’s spot before the ninth.

“He’s having an absolute monster season.  I don’t get it, he was nothing special in Japan.  I think he gave up 10 HRs in about 70 innings there last year.”

Another Ortiz training partner?

Is Julio Lugo really the guy to complain to about unfairly getting hit?

Perhaps Tabata is having a relatively poor year at Tampa because the Yanks paired him with Abreu in spring training.

Maybe A-Rod was just playing the game the right way, Kay.

HE WAS NOT POPPING UP AND LOSING BALANCE KAY! Man I’m glad A-rod did that.

Alex has to get beaned his next PA, right?

Perhaps Tabata is having a relatively poor year at Tampa because the Yanks paired him with Abreu in spring training.

Nice.

On the bright side, at least Bruney will be fresh for tomorrow and Proctor didn’t have to pitch for the third straight day.

A-rod has been getting hit alot this year. Interestingly, he has his best years when he gets hit alot. Last year he only got hit 8 times. He’s been hit 6 already this year and was hit 16 times in 05.

Is it me or has Villone actually been an effective reliever?

Villone actually pitched a 1-2-3, something completely alien to Kyle Farnsworth.

You know what, it’s May 22nd, I’m gonna say it, Manny isn’t Manny anymore. He’s got a .731 OPS. Even if he turns back into Manny, which he won’t, his numbers are not going to be where they normally are.

Also, at least the Yanks kept the game close enough so that the Red Sox felt the need to use Papelbon.

Robinson Cano is in dire need of lotion or some sort of skin care product for his elbows and forearms.

Perhaps Manny decided to flash the leather this year instead of getting it done with the bat.

Patience isn’t a four letter word, Robbie.

Why won’t he stop swinging at that fucking pitch?

Nice AB.

Was that the least likely outcome for that PA?

Did Cano just walk?  I’m shocked.

Did Cano just draw a walk or is Gameday malfunctioning?

At the least, I’d love to see Papelbon throw 30 pitches this inning.

LEAN INTO THAT MELKY IT WAS AN 0-2 PITCH!

Melky should have taken that one for the team.

Why did Torre pinch hit for Phelps, a guy who could put the Yanks back in the game with one swing?

You know what, it’s May 22nd, I’m gonna say it, Manny isn’t Manny anymore. He’s got a .731 OPS. Even if he turns back into Manny, which he won’t, his numbers are not going to be where they normally are.

Manny is still Manny when he plays the Yankees, I think.

Melky should have taken that one for the team.

Maybe he remembered what happened to Mientkiewicz over the weekend.

Paps is sitting at 93 ((just got 94 after rearing back) instead of 95. Hmmmm.

game gets tied…lose the dh or see the first optimal defensive alignment of the year with matsui at first and melky in left?

Damn it. Melky should have taken the HBP.

Is Papelbon injured?  According to Carlos Gomez at THT, his arm slot is quite a bit lower, and his fastball is missing and is not as hard as usual.

How great would it be for Jeter to come up as the tying run?

Nice weak grounder, Johnny.

johnny…

Damon always seems to have good AB against Papelbon…

“Manny is still Manny when he plays the Yankees, I think.”

Well, usually Manny against the Yanks is like Barry Bonds playing in little league.

Why did Torre pinch hit for Phelps, a guy who could put the Yanks back in the game with one swing?

Why did Mr. Burns have Homer Simpson pinch hit for Darryl Strawberry?

Kay: “This games not over.”

Yes it is.

Not a strike.

BALL!

Papelbon gets up for Jeter every time.

Fuck you, ump.

Wow, K’ed him on two straight balls. That’s lame.

Oh well, at least the Yanks made Papelbon work.

The Yankees have to win tomorrow.  Getting schooled by Tavarez tonight showed once again that their hearts may not be in it this season.  A win over Schilling tomorrow could change that.

Bobby Abreu has stolen the Yankess’ mojo.

25 pitches and he didn’t have his normal velocity. And he shouldn’t have gotten out of that inning so easily, what was the umps deal?

If this had been a one run game I might have gone to the Stadium to head butt Hickox.
