Tabata and Garcia Injury Updates
-Baseball America has the scoop on Jose Tabata having surgery to remove his hamate bone. The Yankees expect him to begin rehab six weeks after the surgery and he might still have a shot at playing winter ball. This is, probably, the reason he’s struggled so much to hit for power. Don’t expect him to come back ripping the ball into the gaps and over the fences, it sometimes takes guys a while to get adjusted following this procedure.
-Christian Garcia pulled a Phil Hughes and injured his knee doing some running during his rehab from surgery. Nothing major, but it forces him out of participation in instructs, it seems.

Why remove a bone? Is it malformed or something?

Q: Jim from Iowa asks:
Why isnīt Jose Tabata hitting for any power?A: Chris Kline: We’ve addressed this before, but here we go again: The Yankees claim Tabata’s had nothing more than a biceps injury, but sources close to the club say he has a cyst on his right wrist near the hamate that, in order for it to be removed, would require the hamate to be removed. If you look at his numbers, it screams lack of power, which leads you to believe that there is indeed beef to the hamate thing. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, but for me, I believe there is more than a biceps injury that’s kept him out periodically this season. But if he falls off a lot os stats-based lists heading into next season, don’t be surprised. If he falls off out top 100, it will have less to do with his stats than the health questions—he was seen by five different hand specialists last year. That much is factual.

5 - thanks. I would have thought that if you can’t go through the other side (or the side of the hand), the procedure would be to break the bone, get the cyst, then fix the hamate. A quick google shows that David Ortiz and others have done ok after their hamates broke and were removed.
I had my hamate removed years ago because I broke it it wasn’t that big of a deal. Like 4-6 weeks rehab ad I have’t thought sbout it since but I will grant you I never played big league baseball or even make the minors.
In some future when surgery isn’t dangerous, I imagine athletes going in to have their hamate and appendix removed and have pre-emptive TJ done.
Yankees poised to sign 16 year old Dominican SS, a Bora$$ client, for $4.5 million.
