Slow Night
Injuries/News:
No updates.
AAA:
Steven Jackson seems to have found his arm slot and, resultantly, his effectiveness. The RHP posted a line of 7.1-4-1-0-1-5-0 (IP-H-R-ER-BB-K-HR) as he did a good job of keeping the Pawtucket team off balance. Jackson has shown ability in flashes this season and this was the brightest flash thus far. Hopefully, he can build on this for his next start.
Eric Duncan was 0 for 3. The good news is that he did not strike out. The bad news is that Duncan seems to have a serious problem with popping the ball up. He doesn’t have a pretty left-hand swing, to my eye, though it is quick. It kind of looks like he is chopping down on the ball, which seems to produce a ton of pop ups. I noticed this in his stats last year, but it is something to behold. This is likely the cause of his poor AVG and further takes away from his prospect status.
Alberto Gonzalez was also 0 for 3.
AA:
Terribly uninteresting night.
A+:
Postponed.
A-:
Angel Reyes suffered from Abel Gomez Syndrome today with a final line of 3.1-4-3-3-4-3-0. Reyes has really had a lot of trouble with his control thus far and it is a wonder that he would be allowed to pitch in full season baseball while Dellin and Zach wait in the wings.
Mitch Hilligoss was 1 for 3 with a single and is now up to 18 games in a row. Austin Jackson was also 1 for 3 with a single and caught stealing while Jose Gil and Wilmer Pino were both 1 for 2 with singles. The most important news of the day was that Eduardo Nunez was 1 for 2 with…his first extra base hit of the year, a triple.
Spotlight On:
Chase Wright taking the mound in Scranton. The rest of the minor league rotations are in a bit of a flux, so I’ll have to figure that out.
Comments
Four weeks from tomorrow the draft begins, June 7 to be precise. The Yankees pick 30th. Then, because of the new agreement giving out 35(!) supplemental picks, have to wait to pick again at 95. This seems absurd, and it is.
Also no more draft-and-follow. Last years was the last class for that. Now a player must be signed by August 15.
Was at the AAA game today. I thought Wright pitched well. 7 innings and 1ER, and the only reason that happened was a 2-out fly to left that should have been routine, but LF is the sun field for early games, and as soon as the ball was hit Reese just threw his arms up because he never saw it.
Wright went to 3 balls on a lot of batters and had 3 walks (along with only 1 K), so his control wasn’t great. But very few fly balls, and most of the grounders weren’t hit solidly.
Saw an interesting play. Because of the sun and Reese having problems. On the 3rd fly-ball to left, Thompson took off at a full run to left. Reese didn’t see the ball, and Thompson ended up making the catch just behind Reese in straight-away left. Talk about good range.
