Fortunately, we have both.

hopefully joba gets an inning or less today so i can see him friday

disgusting game last night. Today will be a tough test against bedard for the yanks and hughes.

Keith Law likes Bucholz better then Hughes? Well, he’s the only one.

Does anyone else find this alarming?

“I wouldn’t be surprised to find that his four-seam fastball’s average velocity is declining slightly already due to those (mechanical) changes.”

That’s Gomez on Hughes.

Keep in mind that, when you’re ranking the best prospects in the game, the difference between #1 and #4 is very very slim. Saying Buchholz is better than Hughes is like saying that sex with a blond is better than sex with a brunette—it’s still sex, and you’re still going to like it. smile

P-Abe: “RHP Edwar Ramirez and LHP Sean Henn have been recalled from Class AAA Scranton. RHP Jim Brower and RHP Jeff Karstens are out.”

Does Ramirez get a fair shake now that Joe has seen what Joba can do?

Does anyone else find this alarming?

I believe he also references later that he likes Hughes’s mechanics better now than he did at the beginning of the year, when he originally wrote that analysis.  No, I don’t find it alarming.  I imagine most 21-year old pitchers mechanics change until they settle into the pitcher they will truly be.

Source. Please don’t say the Post.

Source! Peter Abraham
Clearly P-Abe is not taking off as much as I hoped.

i’d rather see Britton over Henn, but i assume this was because Villone is probably unavailable today and Torre wanted a lefty.

i just don’t think Sean Henn is any good.

but Edwar needs to get some innings.  they need to see what they have.

How good could it be if Edwar, Joba and Hughes combine for a shutout today.

Buchholz has good stuff but he might struggle at the big level.  His 4-seamer is not as good as some believe.  He probably has better stuff overall than Hughes but I doubt he’s as much of a complete pitcher.

“Saying Buchholz is better than Hughes is like saying that sex with a blond is better than sex with a brunette—it’s still sex, and you’re still going to like it.”

No, it’s like saying the person you despise the most, his girlfriend is hotter/funnier then yours. I’m not ok with that.

What if Hughes dyes his hair another color?

Hi all, this is Carlos Gomez, the author of the Joba vs. Hughes article.

One comment I’d like to address:

“I believe he also references later that he likes Hughes’s mechanics better now than he did at the beginning of the year, when he originally wrote that analysis.”

What I was actually saying is that I prefer Hughes mechanics in 2006 than what he’s shown in 2007.

Obviously, we have very little sample size to determine if Hughes’ mechanics deviation this season will result in long term problems. Mr. Gomez, do you have any inside knowledge if the mechanical discrepancy was a result of a conscious decision on the team’s part or if this is simply a lapse on the part of the pitcher and the coaching staff?

“Mr. Gomez, do you have any inside knowledge if the mechanical discrepancy was a result of a conscious decision on the team’s pa"rt or if this is simply a lapse on the part of the pitcher and the coaching staff?”

And if it’s the latter, would you tell them please?  They never listen to me .  . .

Trying to be a “glass is half full” guy, Farnsworth looked better then ever last night. He did piss be me off when he didn’t volunteer to pitch the ninth.

i just don’t think Sean Henn is any good.

I was hoping he’d become the inhouse option to fill the old Stanton role, but I agree, Henn’s performance falls short of the wildly optimistic and blind loyalty I’ve invested in all of the homegrown players.

I don’t think Henn is much good, but I also don’t really see any difference between him and Villone.

“Mr. Gomez, do you have any inside knowledge if the mechanical discrepancy was a result of a conscious decision on the team’s part or if this is simply a lapse on the part of the pitcher and the coaching staff?”

Please, call me Carlos. I don’t deserve the Mr. yet….LOL

As I mentioned in the first Hughes article I wrote….

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/if-it-aint-brokea-video-review-of-phil-hughes-mechanical-changes/

There’s a couple of quote there by Eiland and Hughes that point to the changes that have been made that I object to. It looks like it’s by design and I’m not very high on them.

Trying to be a “glass is half full” guy, Farnsworth looked better then ever last night.

Yeah, down 12-0 I’m sure we saw the Farnsworth we would see in a 1 run game.

Carlos, you do very interesting work.  I’m wondering if you’ve watched any more of Ian Kennedy since the draft?  I know you liked him back then when most people were questioning the pick, and he’s tearing up the minors.  I know his stuff doesn’t match up with Joba/Phil, but I think people saying he’s a 3/4 at best are underrating him.

Carlos,

I was just referring to this statement in the article, “I prefer that Phil go to the lower, 2006 version of his arm slot. The Hughes clips in this article were from earlier this year, in May. Since coming off the disabled list, it looks like he’s going with a lower slot, although I would need to really analyze the video in order to make sure.”

when I referenced that you liked Hughes mechanics better now.  I understand you liked them even more last year, but you seemed to be saying he is now closer to last year.  If I misrepresented that, I apologize.

On Kennedy—

I liked the pick last year, then kept watching it over and over and loved the pick even more (on the comments on my article last year on the draft you can tell). Haven’t seen Kennedy much post-draft. I’m gonna make a statement that may get me in trouble, and I reserve to revise until I see more video of Kennedy, but I’m not convinced that Hughes will be better than Kennedy. I have concerns on how durable Hughes will be, and although there is a slight health question for me with Kennedy (elbow), I’d bet that he’ll be more durable.

From a mechanics point-of-view, I take Kennedy.

People, I said from a mechanics point-of-view.

Mike K—

No dude, that would be my bad for misrepresenting what you did say….oops. I prefer what he’s doing now than earlier this year, but not more than in ‘06.

Hughes 2006 >> Hughes now > Hughes in his earlier starts this year

The arm slot is closer to last year’s but his body mechanics really aren’t.

I don’t know if it’s because he hasn’t built hit arm-strength yet, but I see Hughes as generally sitting around 91-92 this year when I remember reading countless reports where he sat a couple ticks higher. Probably just being greedy, but hey a little is something.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
