Action

-So…I’m sure most of you’ve noticed, but since arriving in Tampa, Austin Jackson has been hitting and hitting very well. Jackson was 3 for 5 today with a homer and a triple. In 50 FSL ABs he’s hitting .420/.483/.640 with a 6:8 BB:K ratio. This has boosted his season line to .288/.362/.421. I was ambivalent about Jackson’s promotion to Tampa despite poor numbers and me being a stathead. The reason was that despite poor production, Jackson was making consistent hard contact and it seemed that he was suffering from some bad luck. Well…in Tampa his luck has completely turned around. Given the poor state of things in the Yankee farm system on the position player side, if Jackson can continue to hit well, not this well, but well enough, he could be the second best offensive prospect in the system by this offseason.

-Zach McAllister has a 5.19 ERA, but he’s striking out a batter an inning and generating almost 5 outs on the ground for every out in the air. Other than a poor first start, he’s rolling. Nice to see.

I have been defending Jackson. I haven’t understood why Goldstein has already written him off:

Even with a guy who didn’t work out, Austin Jackson, it shows what they can do. They can laugh and walk away. A lot of other teams can’t. They’ve been doing that the last three years.

Maybe he confused him with C.J. Henry…who they did laugh and walk away from, trading him to Pittsburgh last year.

Philly

Maybe Goldy just can’t help but be negative regarding the Yankees. Perhaps he and Bill Madden were separated at birth…..

Regarding Jackson.  I hope the Yankee hype machine kicks into high gear.

Miranda went 3-4 with a double and 2 RBI for the Thunder last night.
Marquez gave up 1 ER (4 runs total) in 6 innings with 1 walk and 3 K.
The game before was rained out but Miranda had gone 1-3 with a HR in the last complete Thunder game which was the Joba masterpiece.

Oh, and the game before that Miranda went 1-5 but his only hit was a triple.

Edit to #6: The July 4th game was only rain shortened.  Miranda went 1-3 with a double, run, and RBI.
My bad.

Can Miranda actually play 1st? Or is he a DH? The team needs a fulltime 1st baseman who can play good defense and hit.

Unfortunately, there aren’t all that many of them out there.  I’d be happy if Miranda could be a 100% average first baseman.  Play average defense, and put up an OPS around 850.  If he can do that for 3 or 4 years, then the Yankees will be fine, and have time to either target a player on a different team, or develop their own.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
